Yeah, it's pretty unfortunate the anime cut out several scenes in the manga showing their student/mentor relationship

They are basically sparring buddies through their whole cadet training. Eren admires Annie for her skills, which he wants to learn, and Annie is flattered by this and likes his interest and admiration of her.. It even hints that Mikasa is quite jealous of Eren's interest in Annie, which makes the tension between Mikasa and Annie even more fitting.. I just wish they would have showed this relationship in the anime..
