He is in the anime. The manga isn't doctrine for the entire thing, the two are separate.

I always thought it was strange why in the anime they switched him around with "mike" In the manga, Erwin is the one who drops his sword when he faces Levi, not Mike and its Mike who "captures" Levi, not Erwin. Erwin is above average in combat but no where near Mike and Levi's level.
