Early Access - Neon Genesis Evangelion | Reaction & Review Episode 1 "Angel Attack"

It's Time!

Comments

No wonder he always uses subs his first dub experience was the One Piece Dub the most tragic dub in human history lol

Wesley Owens

I actually thought it's kind of patronizing for people who originally saw everything, intro and ending included, to tell new people to skip it. But then I started my copy of the episode, and thought "with his galaxy brain the epilepsy inducing nanosecond flashes of images will tell him the entire story" haha ^^

Soul Nibbler

I think there’s a ton of Shingeki inspo in this series. This was pretty rad to watch you get so stoked for a classic. I completely understand getting hyped about old school anime design, it’s very detailed and distinct!

Sarah S

It shows characters he hasn't seen though. I'd rather he see them for the first time when they're introduced in the actual show. You wouldn't think it's a spoiler but if he's seen a character in the opening he'll know it's an essential character. It's not a big deal but I always appreciate him skipping the openings until later.

DrakDoodles

I can definitely bring the intros back at some point👌🏼but there will be an influx of “your intro is way too long” comments, because the channel intro/opening reel would be staying put. Some things are for me as well, it’s just how I like to present my content, and of course happy that some people do enjoy the opening segment.

FILMBuFF

It must have been rights issues with the blu-ray release. Though I did find this ending quite fitting to the tone of the episode.

FILMBuFF

I think he should watch the intro, its essential to the experience and really doesnt show much about where this story goes.

HawaiinHercules

This is really exciting, experiencing an all time classic not only in anime but in media in general right along side you for the first time is just perfect. Also learning that you started One Piece with the cursed 4kids dub was relatable as I’ve grown up with the Arabic dub which is not as bad as 4kids but still isn’t great lol

Kara the gamer girl from Mars

the second gundam series and then evangelion are the 2 big revolutions in mecha anime, they pretty much created and recreated the genre

Yaorin

For your questions, a lot of them, even very small things have answers, so it's best to let you develop those yourself. It's an iceberg indeed

tom

A lot to discuss here obviously. I want to wait a bit before rewatching the series, so I might give it a few weeks but the discussions is helping to build that anticipation. One thing I will say is I got a glimpse of the end of it and saw that this is indeed the new version which means it's missing the "Fly me to the moon" ED. My first watchthrough was with this new version too, so I don't have much of an opinion but I'm wondering what others' are? I think there will also be some different translations in the subs maybe from what is considered the definitive version, but I think those criticisms were overblown IMO

tom

I agree with missing the intros. It feels a bit jarring getting immediately into the reaction.

More seriously, really looking forward to getting your thoughts on this one mate. Those first times seeing NERV HQ and all the works will never not be cool to me, both from a directing standpoint and just from the fact that it always manages to tap into sense of boyish joy, like the first time seeing a train or a tractor as a child.

Katsuragi Misato; Woof. I've gotta get that off my chest right off the bat. The whole aesthetic is right up my alley.

A Toilet Duck

Maybe it’s just me but I kinda liked when you used to do introductions to your videos, especially at the beginning of a new show. It gave a good idea of where your head was at before going in instead of it just starting. I also think you could cut down the beginning with all the screenshots and make it a bit shorter too. All that aside, I’ve definitely been interested in this anime for some time and I think you’re the perfect reactor when it comes to being introduced to new shows lol. You’ve sure got a full schedule, love to see it 💜

For me it has been 13 years since I last watched Eva. So I’m genuinely super excited to go through this with you and enjoy it in a completely different way. I was around 17 when I last watched this and the way I consume media is totally different now (naturally). You talk about inspiration and it’s no exaggeration to say that “Is that an Eva reference?” is soo common in anime/manga spaces that it’s practically a meme itself. Only really beaten out by “Is that a Jojo reference?” I can think of many times that I’ve been watching something and I would think “They’re going full Eva with this.” Speaking of VA’s I’ve just realised that you are very familiar with one and that going to be a cool moment when you recognise them. To be honest there are a lot of veteran VAs still working even now from this time period. Shinji’s VA just did work on the JJK 0 movie as the lead recently for example. But that’s the beauty of voice work. It does not matter your age or gender you can play pretty much anything as long as you have the talent to do so. This is such an exciting time on your channel and to be a Patreon of yours. Watching Yukimura’s masterpiece Vinland, a new Doctor to enjoy, FMAB’s finale is starting to ramp up, arcane bringing in such great visual storytelling, and of course AOT just round the corner. It’s a good time indeed!

My friend actually showed me a six episode OVA called War in the Pocket that woul also be a great place to start.

Leaky Peach

Kinda insane to say that but I’m currently not caught up with all of the FilmBuFF reaction content that I want to watch and it annoys me the heck out of it. So much exciting content to watch. But I wanted to catch NGE live cause it’s also my first time watching NGE. I did start watching the first episode years ago but kinda dropped it cause it didn't pique my interest at the time. After that I decided to watch it as one of my last anime or at a point where I don’t want to watch this medium anymore cause I know it will be one of my fav anime of all time and it would hook me back into it. I know a little bit more about NGE due to cultural osmosis through the internet but I will obviously not talk about it in these comments. Really enjoyed the first episode and its atmosphere and I already am in love with Misato. Can’t wait for next week

Sloopgamer

It's a real shame that your copy doesn't have the original ending. I feel like you can't get the full experience without the original ED. Anyways...great reaction looking forward to rewatching Eva with you.

Erytropus

Just began following the patreon for Evangelion. Am so excited for your reaction and see you dive deep into what's presented as there's so much to unpack and so many details to notice and I'm sure you'll notice things I never have, as always seems to be the case. This anime is near and dear to my heart with heavy and complex subject matter and a tone and atmosphere that I believe to be simply unmatched. It can be dreary and downright depressing at times, yet still hopeful, heartfelt, and inspiring at others. Some of the most iconic and nuanced characters anime has to offer as well. A beautiful classic and I cant wait to see you experience it too. Love the content and happy to finally be able to support it.

Caleb Rife

Guessing you're recognizing the voice of Ritsuko because she voices Robin

Conroy

Yeah, definitely see a lot of people just refer to Shinji as the Third Child in discussions and posts

edamammy

Started this series not too long ago. Can't wait for all the fuckery and foolishness that will ensue. That Angel definitively looks like a big ass Registeel. Very strange and odd looking. Quite amusing in fact. Misato is such a silly goose...and a bombshell too. Ritsuko not so much, very serious personality but still hot. I believe the elevator scene with Shinji and the oppressive hand was from Unit 01. Very artistic use of shadows and composition. If I had to describe Evangelion in one word it would be "Atmospheric". Very well executed cinematography in the perfect setting. Great Pilot. 🥁 tsssss

Kon

Oof if you were to get into Gundam that'd be insane haha. If you wanna dip your toes in maybe the new Witch from Mercury series could be a good entry series for newcomers. It's standalone and you don't need prior knowledge of the OG Universal Century timeline. (Although being familiar with the classic Gundam tropes and themes definitely won't hurt one's enjoyment)

Gunner

Minor note but the 'Third Children' is a debatable translation. They do literally say that but they are speaking in Japanese - a language that doesn't have separate words for singular and plural nouns. It'd be like saying "the island was hit by 3 tsunamis" - it makes sense in English but 'tsunamis' sounds silly in Japanese. English translations are pretty evenly split if they say 'Third Child' or 'Third Children'. So it really doesn't matter but feel free to not say it like that if it feels weird.

Jacob O'Neill

Wow, thats a good surprise

Meia-noite

I have never, never been so excited to see anybody react to a show. After so many years of watching media, this show remains a rare and difficult favorite in my heart. It is puzzling, confusing, and heartbreaking, but it rewards people who see beyond the flashy exterior and aesthetic. The way the story gets retold in the movies and Rebuild adds to why it's so special.

edamammy

It's been a while since I watched Evangelion so I'm very excited

Olga

The ending song here is replaced because of copyright I'm assuming on the copy you have. Later on I would recommend just checking it out. Its the exact same visuals just with different audio. I feel like it would be important since its such a huge part of the show culturally speaking. Also im not too sure how much youre aware of the content surrounding eva but I would defiantly also check out the movies (the actual movie + rebuilds they are all worth it)

Abdulla Almheiri

It's time!

Leaky Peach

so excited, Im. Let's goooo! Greetings from the Yucatan Peninsula!
