Oh, I forgot to mention on this one, but had been planning to a while. To me this explains the reason for Misato's scowl in an earlier episode when Ritsuko talks about the Second Impact to Shinji. There may be something to what you posed, that it was because she knew Ritsuko wasn't giving the full story, but my interpretation of that scene was always because she has a personal connection to the Second Impact -- and a very complicated one at that, what with it being responsible for her father's death, and tying into her feelings towards the Angels. So that moment was a little bit of foreshadowing for this episode's backstory. That's why she looks almost angry in that scene to me, as the suspicion and anger towards Ritsuko wasn't existent until later, as you've recently watched.

The start of this episode, man. Absolutely iconic. In all honesty, I'd say that this episode is bookended with iconic scenes, for some reason that ramen shop always sticks in my mind as one of the first scenes I think of if someone says the word "Evangelion" around me. I think it's the fact that in this episode it really feels like the characters open up to both each other and to the audience, and that ramen shop truly does feel like a reward off the back of that.

I love that we get more Misato backstory on this one, she really went through a lot and that scene of her alone, floating in the sea devastation around her, and though I'm sure rescue got there fast enough she had to stay there for who knows how long just thinking about what just happened. And I also love how it shows how she and Shinji have become, they relate to each other, Shinji can see that she wasn't really happy about the promotion or at the little party and now he knows too that she has very mixed feelings about her father just as he does. And my boy Shinji, that that for some is not big deal a father telling his son "good job" meant so much to him, finally some acknowledgement. My feeling and thoughts about Gendo still after many years and rewatches jump all over but I will say, I do think he was genuine in that moment Episode 12 - Normal Orchestra / Episode 12 - Misato Main (Entering Chorus)
