Half of if might be a kind of recap episode, but then it's my favorite recap episode of any show. I love the style, as you said, as if it's an official documentation. It leans to it with the lack of a score, but also, except for one or two brief shots of Shinji's face, we never see the inside of the Eva cockpits, nor the pilots' reactions. Only what is seen from the outside is in this 'reel'. So, this is where the name SEELE is dropped for the first time. I recommend just searching for a short youtube video of how to pronouonce that word (it's German for 'soul'), because it kinda irks me when people just say "seal", it makes it sound really silly, because I have to think of the animal haha.
