Apologies for the delay, Rendering is still being a bit wonky with certain type of raw footage, this one was really acting up because of its length as well. This version does end up going to black screen quite early on into the discussion, but the audio is present. I'll keep at it to see if a clean version can be rendered, I'll replace the video if successful.

This isn't entirely correct. 1 - It's more accurate to say they had scheduling issues, not budget issues. The production was a mess because of mismanagement and time reasons 2 - You can see extremely long still frames as early as Episode 4, so this wasn't a random technique they came up with but a stylistic choice 3 - The story and deep psychological themes as well as foreshadowing can also be seen very early in the series, so again they weren't improvising (though they made adjustments to some details and subplots due to external circumstances)

2023-07-29 08:58:59 +0000 UTCTo your question about the production, Gainax was really struggling financially when this came out, and it can be seen in the later episodes, in reused animation or still frame. Despite that, it is a masterpiece, and in my opinion only adds to the atmosphere of the original series.

2023-07-21 00:29:13 +0000 UTCFinally got time to listen to the full discussion. One thing I'd like to bring up is a few episodes ago Rei said she didn't eat meat. I think that ties in with her hating the color red. It gives me the feeling she hates death. In her monologue she says "A woman that never bleeds" which is a woman unable to give life. Just further contributes with the duality of her monologue. Life and death, mountains and sky, red and blue, man and woman, God and man.

2023-07-19 03:05:41 +0000 UTCAhhh yes, here we go. Whilst we've flirted with the avant-garde at various points thus far, it certainly seems that this episode we make our strongest move yet. We've graduated from simply making eyes across the bar to suggesting as much as getting a drink, perhaps making introductory small talk about... whatever it is that people talk about in such situations, the recent weather or something, I don't know. I'm concerned that if I continue this metaphor I may end up exposing myself a bit... Probably best call time on this one here... In all seriousness, plenty to mull over in this one, you really aren't left much time to catch your breath before something else intriguing gets served up.

There's a lot going on there that's easy to miss due the abstract way its presented, but I think I really gives us the best look into here character so far. I also think it highlights one of Eva's best features, and part of why it has had so much longevity, that being how the series keeps itself open for analysis and differing interpretations. Even after almost 30 years you can still argue and debate what certain scenes are trying to convey, and this gives the show a richness that's hard to find elsewhere. Also can't wait for next week! It's my favorite episode :)

2023-07-18 19:17:31 +0000 UTCThe names of the angels are actual names of angels in religion, but for the most part I don't think the names are that relevant, tho I'm sure there are video essays comparing them or things like that haha. I really love the second part, Rei's monologue I used to have it memorized..not anymore but I still love it, I personally feel is one of the things that can easily be left to interpretation in lots of ways, like the first time she says commander ikari she is asking a question like, is the commander actually comforting? or it can be taken some other ways too Rei had some introspection, Shinji got jump scared and went to the hospital smh lol Episode 14 - Normal Orchestra / Rei Solo (ofc)

2023-07-18 17:25:33 +0000 UTCJust finished watching, really enjoyed your analysis of Rei’s monologue, so much great stuff in it. Definitely one of my favourite scenes. Second half of this episode overall is just great, lots of new information as you mentioned with most of it being quite cryptic (the type that will make more sense the further in you go). A lot of interesting set up as well for what’s to come in the second half. You can also notice a tonal shift here compared to the more lighthearted last few episodes, we are entering the true ‘Evangelion’ experience now. Very excited for next week, I believe you will love the next episode!

2023-07-18 17:00:39 +0000 UTCRegarding the pronunciation of Seele, in the show it is pronounced as “say-lay” or “zay-lay”. It is actually the German word for soul, if you wanted the German pronunciation it would be more like “zee-le”.
