Early Access - Monster | Episode 8 "The Fugitive" - Reaction & Review

Btw. I don't know if you have noticed this or anyone has mentioned this, but this series is heavily inspired by 60's TV show. That TV show also inspired a 90's Hollywood movie. As a moviebuff you'll probably figure out what I'm talking about. Character dynamics are pretty much the same, although the movie is missing the "monster".

The recap is something that you come across a lot in anime. Manga typically is not made with anime in mind. So chapters don’t take into account the 20+ min run time of an anime episode. Now there’s two directions an anime can go. They edit down, take away moments to fit. Or if they wanna be completely faithful they have to think “well these chapters fit perfectly together. But to make sure we end that episode with THIS cliffhanger we need to do a bit of recap here”. To my memory there’s one other episode like this around the mid way point. But that’s it. There’s also some episodes with the classic first few minutes to recap the last few minutes of the previous episode. HxH and many other manga to anime adaptions do this. Again to fit what they want to adapt for that particular episode. It’s not ideal but something you just kinda get used to. At this point there’s not a lot I can say about the reasons why I love Eva as a character, because well that goes too far into spoilery territory. But what I can say so far is that she really delves into a character archetype that I love watching in fiction. For me she is the definition of “I get you, girl, but REALLY?!” She’s clearly smarter than she seems. You commented that she seems ‘out of it’ in a particular shot of her with Lunge, but for me, and with the evidence later on that she perfectly well knew whose tie that was, she actually looked like she was thinking “oh, that’s what you are trying to do here? Well I ain’t having it.” She protected Tenma in that moment. The reasons? Well they are definitely manipulative in nature as she uses that knowledge later to use against Tenma when the conversation doesn’t go her way. But I think we have enough evidence to know that she does seem to feel a real sense of loss to the fact that she drove Tenma away from her. The photograph placed in such a way that she was probably looking at it the previous night (and gods knows how many times that past decade). Not to say I don’t think she’s an absolute vindictive bitch, because she absolutely is, but I get her. I understand her humanity and her ‘monstrous’ nature. Plus I find her really charismatic on screen (her VA being really fantastic too) Also love whenever you bring up The Fugitive film. It was one of those films that my parents really loved showing me as kid even though I was definitely WAY too young to watch it for the first time. They just simply called it part of ‘My film education’ 😄
