I like bits of this episode, and bits of the next one. Neither is the most solid tightly written, but both have great ideas and moments. Ashildr, or "Me" as you've come to know her as, is greatly characterized to give Maisie Williams' quite a range to portray for the show. A dreamer, an outcast. And what she may become later. For a bit of personal info as I've done in my mini reviews throughotu S8, this episode was actually the last one I watched of Doctor Who for a while. I didn't complete S9 until over a year later. Life stuff got in the way. So the final shot of this episode was seared in my mind for a while -- while you said it's not a traditional cliffhanger, for me it definitely was, but the passion for the show just wasn't there and I couldn't bring myself to revisit it until there was a new season coming out and I figured I should catch up. That being said, I did remember this episode in being pivotal for that "I remember this face" scene. As you alluded to, there was fan theorizing after Deep Breath about how the Capaldi recast could be canon in some way. It's, in my opinion, elegantly resolved and makes sense. Clara's role this episode is actually quite nice. Her quick thinking in getting Ashildr to unlock her chains feels very Doctor-y, to grab onto a human say "Do what I say, I'll explain later", and then the combiantion of protecting them while telling them what to do and using diplomacy with the aliens to avoid bloodshed... I love that the Doctor had faith in her being able to talk the aliens into leaving, like he just assumed she would be able to (granted, they had been freed, but still it speaks to the trust Twelve has in Clara). I like the line he says about/to her, as you mentioned. There's more lines reinforcing the depth of their connection this season that I realized, which is obviously very poignant and necessary.
