2023-09-23 02:59:55 +0000 UTCThis is definitely one of my favorite episodes of the first arcs, its just so good and hints at the deeper and darker moments that are upcoming in later arcs. Hisoka is absolutely one of the greatest... villains? Not sure if that even is the correct term for him. Also you recognized absolutely correctly that the whole "aura of bloodlust" and "conceale your presence" are the first hints at the power system at play in HxH that gets explained later on.

He is absolutely transparent in who he is and yet one of the biggest mysteries at the same time. And he is honestly in my opinion one of the absolute best of Togashi’s creations. And that’s REALLY saying something because Togashi is just a master of his craft. No wonder soo many creators take inspiration from him. Speaking of Togashi, I love how he is able to write a child. An actual child. Gon for all his talent and potential is single minded and lives completely in his own world and rules that he sets. Prideful and stubborn. *slight fmab spoilers for anyone who hasn’t watched it* that’s why I loved Arakawa’s decision to make the sin pride in a form of a child. It works beautifully. Also just gunna say with every rewatch Gon shoots up my favourite characters of the series. The subtlety in his character is sheer perfection. Can’t wait to continue this journey with you!

2023-09-11 12:39:27 +0000 UTCOh Hisoka…why’d they have to make the coolest character in the show a pedo 😂 honestly I’m glad you addressed it upfront because this aspect of his character is expectedly controversial. I like that it makes me really uncomfortable and that he remains such a charismatic figure at the same time because that duality is key to why Hisoka’s such a good character. He is really the first figure who forcefully breaks the innocent cartoonish veneer of the world and makes you realise that this show is darker than it looks… Also to be honest the more research is done the more it’s clear that many real life serial killers’ compulsions to kill are linked to sexual gratification, one pathological way or another, and I appreciate a show that takes a ridiculous character so seriously in his motivations and psychological depth. Anyway this was a great discussion, it’s so clear how much you’re digging this and it only gets better! This show rewards patience and then some.

Your are one of the few that picked up on the power system being already on display and you are correct but patience.
