This is exceptional television.

A three-hander in a room, with no action, just dialogue, body language, and blocking doing pure character expression that pays off on not only the thematic question of the entire arc: what makes a monster human, and a human a monster?...but also the entire series--what will a world like this one do to a child like Gon? Just cinema. So psyched that you're here. Your analysis is just completely on point as always.

Amazing episode, I'm so glad I was finally able to see your reaction and take on it.

He’s going through the stages of grief, first denial n the rest is sad to see

ozan

its almost like this episode's breakdown happened because he lost someone who became something of that sort

Venator

If only the homie had some sort of father figure, maybe a father to guide him, if only πŸ˜†

51 is in my top 5, even considering the whole show. But some are so close it's not easy to distinguish.

And we already have evidence that Killua feels this way. When was the last time Killua harmed himself because of someone special to him? In the dodgeball game. Killua was willing to have his hands ravished because of Gon, someone special to him.

Antique-Item

51 is easily top 5 for me.

I truly feel sorry for Gon here, and it's what makes me cry in this episode. He's just a child left to fend for himself, no one to teach him how to deal with emotions or the complexities of morality. I feel for the kid. None of it is his fault, he just doesn't know any better.

Venator

I wouldn't compare this to 51, actually I wouldn't even put 51 in my top 5, but I would put 116. But I guess it's all subjective to some extent.

I really shouldn't be suprised at this point but the fact that you caught why Killua recognized the act of putting your palms up on first watch, just awesome (in the traditionnal meaning of it). About Knov and Morel not stepping-in despite seeing how affected Gon was by Pitou: they could justify it by how dire the situation with the ants is, which I understand, but I can't wholly get behind given Gon is a kid. More than Knov and Morel, I can't help but wonder why Biscuit didn't address this when she clearly saw it too, had ample time to adress it as well, and did take the time to tackle Killua's psychological failings. Looking back on all the hints we got that led to this episode, I feel like Wing was the only adult around Gon who tried to teach Gon a healthier mindset. (Edit : Beside Aunt Mito of course!)

other than one piece flashbacks, nothing really comes close to the character writing in hxh i've genuinely never seen anything like it.

Amazing review

Wonderful analysis/review. Hxh always generates great discussions, but I find myself most drawn to what you have to say haha thank you for understanding the characters and plot so well!

Amber

One of the best va performance, one of the best character animation and one of the best episode I've ever seen. Megumi Han cemented herself as one my favorite va ever. The anime really did justice to Togashi's facial expressions in this one. In general just so well animated! Storyboard(maybe ED as well?) was done by Hiroyuki YANO. He worked on episode 51, 74, 108 and more. Definitely the best Storyboarding artist HxH has to offer imo. Great reaction/discussion!!!

Jay

I watched HxH 2011 before reading the manga and didn't know about Kite until his introduction. Initially I was pretty confused about Gon's attachment to Kite and it definitely made me feel different about a lot of scenes on my first watchthrough. I'm glad you were able to watch the first episode of the 1999 :)

Mykel

the way Killua's whole body trembles for a moment after he takes a deep breath, trying to swallow Gon's words, hits me so hard for some reason. and I also like the difference in their conclusions about the reasons for the king’s injury. Gon believes: "When I couldn't forgive myself." But Killua: "Because she is someone who's special to the King." It just seems like such a poignant and tragic reflection of their characters in just 2 lines of dialogue.
