After a lot of thought, this might be my favorite episode. It's that frame of Meruem's look of realization, and it's just a bare sketch of him in the blinding light. That image will stick with me forever and make me so emotional in seconds. It feels like we see Meruem truly naked, stripped to the core, and the expression he wears is so beautiful. The drawing being as minimal as possible, yet whole, reinforces the feeling of 'truth' in me. When I think of Meruem now, that's the first image that comes to my mind. What more can I say...Togashi and this team are truly phenomenal. Edit: Just got to your analysis, and the frame is right there hahaha. Cheers

Yeah this episode really is incredible. Just damn. I bust out laughing when I seen welfin age 100 years though. He just lost all his physical prowress. Started to look like the dog from Tom and Jerry.

And I'm not just talking about post-rose meruem, I'm talking pre-rose as well. He displayed a lot of nuance from the start, always battling internally with himself and wavering between Ant and Human. If that is not a sign of a complex character, then I don't know what is...

If you don't see Meruem as a complex character then I don't know what to tell you. It flew over ur head.

Amazing episode and Meruem is such a nuanced and complex character. So nice to see a "villain" that is developed and polished to this level

I remember watching this show for the first time and questioning why Welfin even existed as a character, maybe even finding him a little annoying. But then I reached this episode, and I'm instead asking myself if this side character just became one of my favorite characters in the arc. I never knew where his storyline was going, but looking back, I absolutely loved it!
Also, Welfin suffering from "choice paralysis" has got to be the best description I've heard of him yet.

I've rewatched the last 10 minutes of this episode probably too many times but it truly is one of the best episode in the anime. Welfin is such an awesome character, that surpasses everyone's expectations. Possibly my favorite episode for Pouf as well, love him so much and that's all there is to it... It's such a Togashi classic as well, where the whole episode is just 3 characters talking and barely moving but is one of the most captivating at the same time.
135 next boys, it's time...

One thing that never fails me about this anime is it's power scaling and Power system. It had to take Netero, the only one who slightly had a chance,to solo 3 of these 4 inhuman opponents.I remember you saying several times you did not think this extermination squad can pull this off ,especially Gon and Killua;and in Gon's case He might be the only person in the world at that moment who could pull something like that off(His transformation). When you look at it on the surface, one would think oh anyone can come up with such a condition, but no.It's basically the same as walking through fire to save someone;all have the ability to,but not the heart and emotional capacity.Gon's recklessness, selfishness and emotional state was what lead to that.Killua or no one in the extermination squad could have pulled that off to sacrifice their future for a short present.Same way Kurapika's Nen condition could only be attained cause of His personal situation of having his whole clan and village killed and harboring that hate for his whole life.So it's not just about coming up with any daibolical condition and it works. He would never had achieved that without those experiences. It's kind of like an unwavering faith. The concept of Nen conditions is so deep its scary when you really Grasp it for what it is ,Waiting to see people like Chrollo and what fuels such conditions to His nen.

Really cool to hear you discuss the visual side of this episode. Honestly, they did such a good job capturing the characters' emotions and mental states, and depicting it all with creative use of imagery. Great episode, top to bottom.

Shaiapouf has always been in my top 5 of this series ever since I watched it 8 years ago. But honestly with every rewatch and year that goes by he may be top 1 of this series.
He is everything I could want in a character and antagonist. You know those characters that are just made for you? Yes, he’s that for me. Almost Shakespearean and his VA is just spectacular. I have enjoyed soo much your appreciation and love for him. My sweet butterfly boy 🦋🦋🦋
Also this episode is just phenomenal. The emotions I felt with the sequence after Komugi’s name is said. I’ll never forget it.

The episode features one of my fav sequences of hxh. One of two I will never forget are the one before the intro showing the cruelty of humanity. There is something I want empathize here the soundtrack that you can hear there is called "Kingdom of predators" and throughout the whole arc we always hear it in some correlation to the ants. Therefore we are thinking the predators are the ants and in this episode we realize the predators were never the ants. It was always the humans. The second one is of course the moment Meruem remembering Kumogi. The words from Pouf after feeling that "He loves her more than I feared"... I will never forget this quote. So beautiful and perfectly capitalizes on the themes of the arc. It's so ironic how the humans in this arc show us the worst side of humanity with Netero, Gon and the chimera ants show us the positive side of humanity with Meruem, Ikalgo, Welfin. Yeah, their influence stems/starts from humans but at the end of the day they all made the decisions themselves

The score and look on Meruem's face when it cuts givea me goosebumps every single time I see it, even after over TWENTY times rewatching this series in its entirety, not even counting the dozens of times I've watched single episodes. Just incredible man.

also love seeing your appreciation for Pouf! So many just hate him and find him annoying, which is sad because he's a brilliant antagonist, he drives this latter part of the arc's entire plot. Not to mention how vital he is to the thematic heart of the story, he is the inhuman, the animal driven by instinct and pre-programming, the foil to Meruem's burgeoning humanity.

The cinematography in this episode is some of my favourite in the series, truly beautiful as you mentioned.
As an aside, I loved pausing and looking through each of Welfin's frames throughout his life
