Also the part where the camera zooms in on Johan reacting to the books contents reminded me heavily of a certain moment in Death Note, if you know what I mean. (coincidentally produced by the same studio, too!)

2025-02-24 23:25:35 +0000 UTCI think that the fact that MONSTER doesn't move all too much and doesn't have anything flashy ("sakuga") helps it be consistently on-model with good drawings nearly every episode. The production is outstanding, considering this is a long running TV anime. That's thanks to the excellent rotation of good animation directors and key animators, and whenever the show needs to have a more ambitious episode, like this one, it's able to, and it's great. Also, the director of the series is really good, and his touch is felt all over the series. It never feels out of touch tonally, despite the multiple different episode directors. I also have to praise the background art, it's truly amazing, the art direction. And the soundtrack is amazing too, with top notch song selection, that never feels out of place. All the departments come together here to craft an amazing series with amazing episodes like this, and more great episodes in the future!

There are many animes where the audiovisual production adds a lot more to the work when compared to the original source (like AoT), but in the case of Monster, I think a lot of the credit for the direction goes to Urasawa himself — his art style is already quite cinematic, despite the limitations of the medium, and the anime direction is very faithful to it. The manga has so many great panels. You should definitely check it out sometime!
