I do feel like Julian and Lulu learned a lesson through a simple strategy bringing them so close to defeat. I think the real growth will happen now that Croagunk is on the team. There is less urgency to the situation so they’ll spar together and discuss strategy. This is simply my opinion which, of course, could be proven wrong immediately in the next chapter lol

Julian and Lulu didn't actually learn anything from this encounter, well, maybe except the fact that pokemon also can become dejected about relationships. When the fight came, I kind of felt like everything that happened is what would happen in an anime too, it didn't force our protagonists to go out of their comfort zone and thus the importance of the battle is just reduced to 'proving croagunt wrong'.
