Making of "Trick or Treat"
Added 2019-10-31 17:17:49 +0000 UTCWe were completely drawing a blank on a trick or treat comic. I really wanted to do one with them out in their costumes, because I knew the visuals would be fun, but as trick or treating wasn't so big in the UK where I grew up, I've only actually been twice in my life and didn't have a lot of experience to draw from.
Luckily for me, I have a bunch of very funny friends, one of whom used to do a webcomic, (which we're trying to get him to start up again!) I asked if they had any ideas and he came up with this fantastic script! I knew it was a winner straight away!
He said he wasn't sure on the fandom to use, so he pitched it to me with Yu-Gi-Oh. We briefly considered making it about a bigger franchise (Pokemon, Harry Potter, Star wars?) to give it more viral potential, but the idea of Dad Cat in a Blue Eyes White Dragon costume was just too hilarious to give up!
Fran and Cooper's costumes were up for grabs, so I worked in some foreshadowing -Fran is a big horror nut. She's dressed as Jason and Cooper as Chucky.
I also wanted to tell a little visual "story" with Cooper being completely oblivious to the confrontation and just happy with his candy.
All of this made for the most complicated strip I've ever done! The inking and coloring alone took 2 DAYS! Whew! I'm happy with it though and relieved to see how many Yu-Gi-Oh fans there still are in the world haha!
