Making of "The Discovery"
Added 2019-11-12 04:05:07 +0000 UTCOne day I discovered a rogue pen lid on the floor. Luckily for me, it was just a kids pens and the fallout wasn't too widespread and most definitely washable! A comic idea was born!
I knew a lot depended on the expression in the last panel and had it in my head as being hyper detailed, like something from Ren & Stimpy. When got to drawing it, I realized I had no idea how that would actually look and the roughs ended up going more anime.
I figured I'd embrace that (it was a LOT easier!!) and googled "shocked anime face" for some reference. I combined a few different pictures, but this was the main one:
It suddenly occurred to me that a permanent marker lid would be MUCH funnier than the Crayola pen lid I'd actually found. I googled Sharpie lid to get some reference pics and only then discovered that this whole setup is an existing meme!
I briefly considered scrapping the comic, but by this stage I'd put a bit of work into it and liked where it was heading. I consoled myself that I had come upon the idea "honestly" and forged onwards. I'm happy that I did, I feel like the anime face and bonus panel add enough to make it stand on it's own.

I'm glad you didn't scrap it! I found it hilarious! I thought the anime face was a bit out of line with the rest of your drawing style, since you don't utilize that ordinarily. I would have expected a scaredy cat reaction with dilated pupils and fluffed fur.
