Making of "Drink Thief"

Me stealing J's drinks has become somewhat of a running joke between us. The other day he got me good by letting me "steal" a drink from the day before. My thought process was “I feel like calling him a bitch. Should I call him a bitch?? *checking humor filters* Yes. Yes I should.” 😅 It was such an out of character response, it had us both laughing and we thought it would make a good comic.

Here's where it gets interesting, we both saw the delivery of the line very differently. I had intended to say it in a cheeky way, but clearly my delivery was off, because J heard it more deadpan. This resulted in some creative in-fighting over how the comic should be arranged.

I did my roughs and showed it to him. He then did his version with Fran grabbing the drink and walking away. It looked great, animated in my head, but in a strip I just couldn't get it to work. I managed to win him around about her sitting still by arguing that part of stealing his drinks is me looking him directly in the eye while I'm doing it. He said "Oh. Yes. You do do that." 😑

He then made a case that her being shocked at the end to make the deception funnier. The faces he'd drawn (esp the 2nd panel) were priceless! So I blended them into what I had already.

I went all the way to the end, but Fran's reaction in the last panel was still bothering me. I just loved the idea of them being so close that she was more impressed than hurt. I did an alternative "smarmy" pose and asked my friends to pick between them. They all went for that one, so I switched it back over. Sorry honey! 😘
