I love zombies. I thought about just drawing the family as zombies, but I've wanted to do a good zombie comic for EVER! I brainstormed until it hurt. I knew I wanted them to be zombies, but there's quite a big set up to being turned. Eventually I thought, what if there is no explanation -they just ARE zombies. Then what? I made a list of usual family activities (eating, bedtime etc) and kept pushing all the angles until this hit me! It was so simple and I got to draw zombies for the whole thing!
I initially wanted her being surprised by the microwave DING; like she'd put the brain in there, but forgotten about it. I had to remove it because there were only 6 panels and the pause before the punchline was far more important.
I often find it easier to design characters outside of the comic, in more neutral poses. Here's the initial draft of the zombies:

I had a chunk taken out of Frans head initially that I ended up having to remove because it was interfering with her stripes. Sometimes you don't realize these things until you add color! I gave Fran the bitten ear instead of Vincent because it would be a lot more visible on her.
The colors were REALLY fun to do on this one! I read a tip once that it's not just the colors you pick, but also the ones you leave out. I tried to restrict my palette to greens and purples. The only "sunny" color being the microwave glow.
