Making of "Playtown"
Added 2021-03-25 17:01:07 +0000 UTCI turned my nose up at classically "girly" things when I was little, but I've always had a soft spot for animals. As such, Sylvanian Families (aka Calico Critters) crept in under my tomboy radar and I amassed a large collection. My friend Tom would come over and we'd spend hours setting up the town. Once all the backstories had been established it was time to unleash the Dino-Riders!
I thought this premise would be a good introduction to Kitty Fran! :)
I initially had her looking more maniacal at the end, but decided that a cold stare was funnier. As I wasn't showing the attacking army in the main comic I decided to make it something less specific than Dino-Riders, although you can be sure they'll be featured at some point, because Dino-Riders are THE BEST!
Mr Pibbs was J's idea. Really upped the creep factor and I did have a Glo-Worm, so it was perfect!
The Sylvanian Families proved an absolute nightmare to draw and color! I wanted to make sure I used sets from the 80s, so I was forced to google "vintage" everything, (which was upsetting!) and then I needed an arrangement that looked natural, but also didn't have any tangent issues, where things/colors aren't overlapping and ruining the composition.
