Making of "Birthday Pup"
Added 2021-06-30 18:11:17 +0000 UTCI did the initial sketch for this one last summer, the same time as "Drama". I didn't want to do two "dogs destroy stuff" gags back to back, so I sat on it for a while. As often happens, the more I looked at it, the less funny it got, until I really started to hate it. I shelved it for nearly a year and luckily when I opened it up again, I realized I did in fact have something here.
After refining the sketch, I still felt like it was off somehow. I asked my friends for feedback and changed:
- Wrapped present to cuddly toy to make the joke clearer
- Leaned into false impression that the dog didn't like the toy in panel 3
- Punchline phrasing
- Dog more obviously grateful in panel 4
