Making of "The Explorer"

4yo was watching some dumb YouTube surprise egg video and was FURIOUS when the man dared to open the blue egg against his wishes.

Dora the Explorer is the classic example of these types of videos and I knew people would get a kick out of a Litterverse Dora. I wasn't exactly sure what animal she should be though, so I took to Twitter to find out! I had a bunch of fantastic suggestions, but the one that really stood out was a sloth. It was a South American animal, I could maintain the iconic Dora silhouette AND it had a great gag about her being slow!

I haven't actually seen a whole episode of Dora, so I had to do more research than I would have liked into that! Thankfully I found this page and managed to cobble together a script from that.

I took a picture of Dora and cut it up to make her legs a bit stumpier. Then I drew the sloth bits on top. I mimicked the show style, with the colored outlines and painty background.

I had some fun with the lighting on this one, making it look like he was plonked in front of the TV. I tinted the last panel slightly red and used red shadows instead of my usual purple to up the drama.

I considered having the last line "I SED NOH!" to sound more toddlerish, but I worried it could take away from the impact of the line.

The finial touch was to tilt his head to the side in panel 3, to give him more of a "What the **** did you just say?!" look.
