Making of "Urban Legend"
Added 2021-10-11 14:22:16 +0000 UTCComictober has been useful because it's forcing me to create content on demand, rather than waiting for the kids to do something funny. I've always said the characters are based on us, rather than us. To me, they are their own "people" with their own stories to tell and I'm relieved I'm getting better at generating those stories, because I'm acutely aware I only have a certain amount of time to crib from my real kids before they'll be too old and I'll be on my own.
For this one I looked up a list of classic urban legends. The "call is coming from inside the house!" stood out because it used to be such a big one and it totally doesn't work now. I brainstormed lame things that people now might find scary and landed on the internet going down. I purposely made it only a week to make their terror even more ridiculous.
I had loads of fun lighting this one! I adapted the linework from Back Up for the first panel. I always flat out the "real" colors first and then add lighting effects on top. Here's the flats next to the shading so you can get a better idea what's going on:
