Making of "Safe at Home"
Added 2022-01-18 23:52:22 +0000 UTCJ came home from his annual checkup saying he always thinks of the kids attacking him when they ask if he "feels safe at home". He suggested the comic could end with Joel staring off into space while the nurse says "Sir?" That left me with the job of thinking up "fun" ways to hurt him! :)
Following the rule of threes, the first was easy: nut-shot! J has also had his tooth broken by an ill-timed jumping child, but that would be hard to draw with their big heads! General attacks while playing seemed a good one and then either having his face scratched up or being jumped on while sleeping.
Fitting all that into the comic was a challenge. As always, I attempted to squeeze it into 2 rows at first, (less is more!) but it wasn't happening. I felt I should use thought bubbles to make it clearer, but somehow it seemed to have the opposite effect? Things got easier once I switched back to normal panels.
I didn't do any embarrassing poses for this one (sorry!) but I did rely heavily on reference photos I found online:
As for the seal nurse. The doctor has been shown before and is a dolphin, so something about sticking with the aquatic theme seemed right?
