We did Disney World in December. It was our first foray into being the grown ups on such an adventure. We predicted it would be tough, but rewarding and we were pretty much on the money -although quite how tough was maybe underestimated!
So much happened that I couldn't possibly fit it into a single comic. Even GETTING to the park was a disaster! We made the mistake of trusting the GPS and ended up driving right up to the back of Space Mountain! It was kind of interesting seeing the backside of Disney, trucks unloading pallets of flowers, but at the time that car was not the happiest place on earth!
After the stress of queueing and tickets and there not being a toilet until you're inside and f*ck it, 4yo needs the toilet, I'M GOING IN. We finally made it. At the helm, overwhelmed by choices, I guided our little party to a rocket merry-go-round type ride that had the shortest queue.
The rockets ended up being high up and 7yo got into a grump and said he wasn't going on them. We nervously joked that "I'm sure he will once we get to the front!" NOPE! If nothing else, he is a man of his word. J had to stand to one side with him while me and 4yo rode it. Not a great start.
7yo continued to be mopey, unimpressed with the overpriced Mickey pretzel we bought him. Hoping some nostalgia would turn things around (or at least cheer us up!) we made our way to Pirates of the Caribbean. I sat next to 4yo, who quaked and covered his ears through the entire ride. Getting off, I thought we'd failed again but then 7yo LIT UP! "That was AMAZING!" He was suddenly all about pirates and we rewarded him with an overpriced plastic sword and overpriced Pirates of the Caribbean t-shirt, which he put on immediately. 4yo then burst into tears because HE didn't get anything. We managed to talk him down from buying duplicates of everything 7yo bought (that way expensive madness lies) and placate him with an overpriced bubble wand. Happiest Place on Earth status was obtained! -at least momentarily.
Coming back into school after the holiday and the friendly receptionist asked how Disney went. Immediately my mind was filled will all the terrible ordeals of the trip, but before I could answer, 7yo piped up "Disney is SO COOL!" and both kids started tripping over each other to describe all their adventures. Welling up, I thought in that moment "it really is magical, isn't it?" ...And -"this would make a good comic!" :)
