Making of "The Call"

J's grandma passed away last year.  She was one of those "I had a good life. Happy to finally know what's coming to get me and enjoy what I've got left" sort of women.  I hope I can be nearly as cool as her one day.

When J explained the loss to our eldest, this was pretty much word for word his reaction.  He was OUTRAGED!

A couple of weeks ago, J said I should make it into a comic.  I wasn't completely sure about it, but he said his grandma would have found it funny.

I started out with them sitting at a counter. I guess I'm just so old that I still think of people taking important phone calls at counters? -Plus I really wanted to not have to draw them sitting!

I ran it by J, but he said the counter was detracting from the emotion of it, so I begrudgingly upgraded them to a (much harder to draw) armchair.  It was a pest, but definitely helped the tone.

He also said Vincent should have a more James Franco look in panel 3:

(I wish I could have gotten it closer, but in cartoon form it looked a lot more angry)

I took out Vincent's speech bubble in the last panel, because just like in "Temperature" the expression was already selling it.

Fifteen minutes prior to posting the idea for the bonus panel hit me.  This one didn't actually happen, but it was something I'd come up with a little while ago.  It felt a bit weird showing it to J and I offered to take the ears out, but he agreed that they did add to the awfulness of the situation! 😅
