Making of "Evening Plans"

This should have been an easy comic.  Instead I did a WHOLE OTHER comic first!!  

Lets start at the beginning.  This one sooort of happened.  J asked if I wanted to watch something after we bedtimed the "shit-heads", but then followed up with "That I looove!" as a joke to me.  The kids were in the room, but getting on with their own thing, so they only caught the last bit and briefly wondered what was going on. 😄

J suggested changing it to "A-Holes" for the comic, to make it a bit more accessible, plus I feel like shit-heads is perhaps a bit more English?

So, easy comic, right?!  It should have been, but for some reason I decided to draw them snuggled up on the couch.  Any kind of embrace is hard to draw with their enormous heads and it took me so long to figure out, that I don't think J had the heart to tell me something was off about it.  It wasn't until I was completely finished and came back to look at it the next day when I realized my mistake.  They looked too "Netflix and Chill", plus it wasn't completely clear that Joel didn't know they were there.  Not realizing someone is standing behind you is one thing, but it's hard not to sense when someone is sitting next to you on the couch.  

I didn't want to risk people thinking he was being deliberately shitty to the kids, so back to the drawing board I went!  For some reason Clipstudo didn't export my progress pictures properly for this leg, but I went through all the usual stages.

I didn't end up doing a bonus panel because I was SO SICK of this strip by that stage that I just wanted to run away and do another!  Here's the before and after! (I can't believe I'm saying that for a brand new comic!)  The annoying this is, visually the 1st is better, it just doesn't tell the joke properly.  Ah well, I'm sure I'll use the snuggly linework at some point in the future!
