Making of "Late to Class"
Added 2022-05-05 16:58:45 +0000 UTCI was reading the comments on a Facebook post about kids saying inappropriate things. Someone said they could believe the original post, because they were a teacher and had heard a toddler say something along the lines of "Mommy needs to get her shit together".
The juxtaposition of Cooper saying rude things will never not be funny, plus the squirrel teacher hadn't had much love, so I went for it!
I picked tall panels so I could get away with not drawing the other kids. I try to arrange panels to reveal expressions in "reading order", so I had Cooper walking right to have his expression before hers. Thinking more though, I realized if I flipped everything, I could get in a bonus joke with the book cover -it also didn't really matter which way Cooper was walking, because with a tall panel, you're probably going to scan down rather than left/right!
Her expression was surprisingly challenging. I had her more shocked at first, but it didn't look quite right somehow. I changed it to look more spontaneous, like her smile had *just* dropped.
I googled popular kids books to see what to parody and the immediate idea was "The Very Hangry Caterpillar". I feel like I've been leaning on "hangry" jokes a lot lately, but it's such a good word! :)
