Making of "Move"

As a horribly awkward English person, I think about stuff like this a lot.  With the addition of social distancing In the summer of 2020, I thought about it a whole lot more!

I sketched out this comic and showed it to J.  He didn't really get it, so I tried tidying it up a bit.  He got it, but didn't really find it that funny -he's not so into the #relatable stuff.  I pursued it, but with the character designs and backgrounds it was proving to be a huge time sink.  I got half way through inking it and lost faith in the joke.  I was worried after all that work, I'd post it and it would fall flat!  I cut my losses and figured I'd leave it as an exclusive comic for the eventual book.

Roll on 2 years and I am getting stuff together for a book.  I took a fresh look at this one and realized it would do far better online with the "relatable" factor than it would as a book exclusive!  It was already half way inked, it wasn't too hard to push it over the finish line.  I'm glad I did!  It's been my most popular comic on Twitter by FAR!  Funny how that works! :)

For the bonus panel, I wanted them all tired looking, still standing there as the store closed -BUT I had covid, so I didn't have the strength to do that!  I took the easy way out and made it go dark haha! :)

That's a good question! It's been 2yrs and I can't actually recall. I remember thinking a sheep with a rockabilly haircut would be cool. I'm not sure where the mandrill came from -I think I just wanted something with an interesting grumpy face. Looking at the sketches, it seems like I came up with foods they were holding after the animals, because the mandrill appears before the bananas.

How did you choose the species for the other two?

The replies were fascinating! The full range from "I feel SEEN!" to "Do people really do this?!"

This comic appealed immediately to me, because I was in this situation way too often (I spend grocery shopping yesterday longer than needed, because of it). And seemingly a LOT of your readers experienced it too.
