Making of "Now Streaming"
Added 2023-04-10 18:08:02 +0000 UTCMy goodness, the crap my kids will watch if granted unfettered access to YouTube! I've tried to curate channels to keep things crafty or sciency, but somehow the algorithm still manages to pull them towards farts and nonsense! It's not like I don't enjoy a good fart joke myself, but when I think of the amazing things they COULD be watching I despair somewhat -geeze I sound OLD! 😅
Anyway, I know I'm not alone in this frustration, so I thought it would make a good comic!
This one was pretty quick to draw, helped immensely by recycling the background from Why Daniel? I spent much longer than I would have liked drawing Joel from behind on the last panel, only to realize they'd look better slightly bigger and losing his butt which had taken a while to figure out (I still struggle with anatomy).
J watches a lot more YouTube than me so he suggested the video title and described the sort of thing it should be (the guy doing the O-face was vital!). I've listened to the kids "Hey Google" requests enough to learn their fondness for 10 hour loops (save me!) so I added "10 HOURS!" to the end of J's title.
I researched YouTube thumbnails and saw they were often the streamer making that face and a whole bunch of clip-art laid haphazardly on top. I googled fart clipart and recreated some of it. The tricky bit was arranging it so that everything was visible and the colors popped out the different shapes.
When I was searching for an animal to be the streamer, a bad smell wafted up from from under my desk and looked down to see our resident farter, Captain Harlock. Knowing Boston Terriers are infamously stinky, he was the perfect subject and a fun Easter Egg for the friends that know him! :)
