Making of "Catch BONUS"
Added 2023-09-01 17:24:21 +0000 UTCWhat had I done to myself?! Drawing a BIKE?! A pain in the ass BIKE, for a comic that doesn't even need a bonus panel?! My brain wasn't letting up, so there was nothing to it, but to do it!
I'd already seen that having Dog Dad and Baba close up delivering their lines wasn't that funny, so I put them in the background and focused attention on Beans going mental. I needed a bike reference photo with just the right angle and energy level and after trying a few out I finally found it:
I traced over the bike, simplifying it where I could. As my characters have warped proportions I had to take some artistic liberties, so don't look too hard at it! I very quickly realized that I hadn't accounted for her tail billowing after her, but I managed to arrange everyone else around it and it kind of actually did wonders for the composition!
I'd had 2 squirrels in the comics before. One is Cooper's teacher, so I reasoned the Dog family might have met her before, and the other is the nut seller Hazel from the "Huh?" Bonus panel. Rather than designing a whole new squirrel, I reasoned it might actually be funnier (and definitely easier!) to have it as her again!
For Bean's face I referenced his feral faces from "Alpha" -although still drawing it as a new face because I needed a unique angle -plus they're fun!
