Making of "Year In Review"

The first half of this one has been sitting in my notes forever! I'm pretty sure J said it to our oldest at some point. It wasn't until I paired it with something the oldest said a couple of years later that it finally graduated to comic material!
For the record, he was asking for coal because of Minecraft, rather than being an aspiring arsonist -although I guess all roads lead to the same destination! 😅
I drew this one with Vince coming up to Fran at the kitchen counter, but when it came time to ink I realized a) it looked boring and b) it wasn't very festive! I was about to draw the fireplace with stockings in the background, but that seemed odd -right next to the kitchen? Then it hit me! 2 birds with one stone and have Fran hanging the stockings! Of course, that meant redrawing/rearranging a large potion of the comic, which wasn't ideal, but it gave it a unique look, which I love!
The expressions were fun in this one! Some I reused, but they're classics! My oldest wears his heart on his sleeve (if he feels something, you know it!) and I try to capture that in Vince because I find it endearing. He jumps around dramatically here; serious, then happy, mad and delighted!
Fran's reaction at the end took some figuring out. The obvious answer was to have her eye-rolling, but I really try to avoid that cliché if at all possible, so I came up with her thoughtfully gazing into the stocking with a "should I?" look!
