Making of "Tattletale"
Added 2024-02-08 15:03:41 +0000 UTCOur youngest is going through a phase of telling on our oldest, which is pretty easy because our oldest makes a lot of bad calls! I never understood the "Don't Tattle" thing until now. I thought "of course you should tell a grownup if there's something amiss!" -but I hadn't envisioned this! We'll all be having a fine time and then 6yo will drop a "Do you remember that time when 9yo did [insert terrible thing]?!" 9yo will defensively snap back and then we have a fight on our hands from absolutely nowhere! I think 6yo is mainly trying to organize his memories, but also maybe there's a little "if HE'S the BAD one then I'M the GOOD one!" at play! Anyway, it's been an issue and sparked this real life conversation -complete with expertly delivered punchline!
I couldn't remember what 9yo had done to set the whole thing in motion, so I had to make something up for the comic. It needed to be immediately clear that Vincent wasn't in danger, so I thought "broke his new..." would show that HE wasn't hurt. In retrospect I wish I'd found a more obvious nothing burger, because people in the comments were concerned (or intrigued) by what had happened. That's one of the tough things about comics -not having enough room to tell the whole story!
I modified previous linework I had for Joel kneeling, so the only real difficulty was drawing the hands. Here's me being a dork, taking reference photos for panel 3!

After I posted, someone pointed out that Cooper must be growing up because the font was the normal one now. That was in fact a mistake on my part and I went back and corrected it where I could! π
