Making of "Clock"

Buckle in, because this one was an ADVENTURE!

Alright, lets start at the beginning.  A lot of people know the infamous "Peanuts Comic", but that didn't actually happen to me, that was Marcy G from Twitter.  The one that DID happen to me was this:  When my oldest was very little he'd drop the L in clock.  One time hubby had to go in somewhere and I figured we'd wait for him in the waiting room rather than the car.   On walking in I am immediately greeted by an enormous black clock on the wall, so I spin right around and walk back out again.

It always struck me as funny, (especially after playing Cards Against Humanity!) and has been sitting in my notes for YEARS, but it wasn't until now until I felt like I could draw it.  In retrospect, my determination might have been ill placed because what followed was drawing the same comic 3 different ways!

The first attempt was this:

I wasn't sure about it, so I showed my friends.  One of them thought I needed more panels at the beginning with different clocks to establish the ongoing problem.  Another thought the ending could be different and yet another loved it as is.  I thought I could do better, so I took a stab at making it longer and closer to the true story:

I felt it was important to stress they'd be waiting in there a while and I tried to punch it up with Fran's ridiculous excuse, but it was now too long and rambly for the punchline payoff.  Luckily at that point, my pal Zach from Last Place Comics got off work and replied!  He suggested adding more clocks and ending it like this:

It made me laugh a lot, but now Cooper knows exactly what he's doing, which isn't really what he's about.  I liked the "DON'T" though, so I ditched the very last panel.  To keep the "BIG COCK!" joke alive I had Cooper getting a bit more descriptive with the earlier clocks.

After already spending way too long on this, now I had to ink and color!  Anything with extra characters and backgrounds always takes longer, but there was no avoiding them here.  I needed the world populated to make it embarrassing!

Trudging to the end, thoroughly tied of looking at this comic, I decided it would be a disservice after all this, not draw the wall of clocks poperly.   Thank goodness for Google Image search!
