Making of "Marketable Plush"

This one sort of happened. J's been working with a company to turn his pumpkin headed skeleton cat from Greetings From Grisley into a plushie. He asked the kids if they'd want one, to which they eagerly replied "YES!", but then the 6yo corrected himself:

6yo "No! I want a Porg".

8yo "Dude, you have like 3 porgs already!"

6yo "I want 4".

Now as I said in the comic post, the funniest thing about this is our kids haven't seen the new Star Wars yet, so his love of porgs come purely from these 2 youtube videos:

I think this might have gone down sometime just after May 4th, because I remember being annoyed it was too late to use it for a Star Wars Day comic! I figured I'd save it for this year and make it about something different than a Finito plushie, but then this year rolled round and low and behold I have my own plushies, so it was perfect!

I upped the porg count from 4 to 7 to make it funnier. There's already quite a bit of variation with the porg toys he has, so I googled to find more types and make them all a little different.

You can briefly see at the beginning of the video that I originally had it as 3 panels, but I quickly realized Cooper pausing and looking at his collection before delivering the punchline made it hit so much harder! I also made him look sort of mad at the end, rather than the more obvious cute delivery. I liked how it made him look outraged that Joel would even suggest that 6 porgs was enough! :)

Finally you might have noticed that to be accurate to the original story, Vince should have delivered the 2nd line. I only had it written down and didn't realize that was our eldest's comment, so I drew Joel saying it. J corrected me when he saw the roughs, but by then it would have been hard to wrangle Vincent in there (I don't like characters suddenly appearing from nowhere) so I just left it as Joel -oldest picked up that way of talking from him anyway! :)
