Making of "That Time"
Added 2024-07-05 22:59:48 +0000 UTCI was looking for a quick solid comic to do, so when this happened it immediately jumped to the front of the queue! I knew I was on to a good one because it kept making me laugh while I was drawing it, much to J's delight! :)
I knew Vincent would be playing switch, but I wanted something funnier than just sticking Cooper in front of an iPad. My cats have been back into playing with the ball run pyramid thing (not sure on the official name!) since I got it back out of the cupboard, so it was on my mind. It looks a bit like a toddler toy, so it was perfect!
I ran into some trouble fitting all 3 of them in the first panel. Joel is so lanky, so to fit him in head to toe, the boys have to be shrunk down. I tried to get around it by having his head out of the frame, but the speech bubbles were looking messy on top of him. Eventually I realized I didn't need him in panel 1 to make the story work, so I got to make C&V bigger.
I played around with the expressions a fair bit, trying to make them as funny as possible. I was particularly pleased with Vincent's faces. J always tells me that out of everyone, I capture our eldest's mannerisms the best -I guess because I am confronted with them so much!
I initially had Joel in the last panel doing more of a "woe is me" plea to the sky, but J suggested I make his arms more rigid and have him looking forward instead. I wasn't sure, but I tried it out and immediately saw what he was getting at! So much more mocking! Had me laughing all over again! :)
