Making of "Foolproof" (Part 1)
Added 2024-12-13 17:38:07 +0000 UTCJ gave me this comic idea, but he didn't have an ending. He said it was something his Grand-dad would always do, but suggested making it Joel's Dad instead, because his character is a mix of his Dad AND Grandfather. It was a fantastic idea, but all we had for the end was "Joel tries it and Vincent does something funny"!
It languished in my notes for a while, partly because of the absent punchline, but also because I knew I'd have to design young Grampaw. Having to draw something that will be canon always stresses me out! I worry I'll make a mistake that I won't be able to fix later!
On a re-read Vincent's comeback popped into my head out of nowhere! "I have people for that." Yup! That's so him! With a punchline to motivate me, I got to work designing young Grampaw. I took old Grampaw and adult Joel and merged them together -something that was a bit strange, seeing as old Grampaw had originally been created from Joel! I based him on J's Dad when he was younger and tried to add the clear avatar glasses he used to wear, but glasses are always a tangent nightmare and it made him look too old.
I'd drawn kitten Joel once before in this comic, but never done a proper character sheet for him. As Kitten Fran is squat like Cooper, I thought it would be cute to make Kitten Joel more lanky like Vincent. It's funny when you think about it that it's ended up with the children dictating how the parents look as kids rather than the other way around!
