What if instead of Anakin becoming a Sith, Padme was tempted to the dark side of the force?
Not to kill the Jedi, but to corrupt them from within?
Palpatine realized that if he focused on Padme instead of Anakin and transformed her completely in exchange for power, she and Anakin could be together and at the same time the Queen of Naboo would become unstoppable.
