If that's the case, he wasn't "sent" to spy on Will because he has lived in Hawkins most of his life, he was ordered to get close. But I don't think a government agent would have forgotten the gun, and also he did seem to really care for Joyce and Will.

I've heard that Bob Newby was supposed to die to a possessed Will in like episode 3, but Sean Astin just kept nailing his scenes so hard that they kept him for longer.

As someone who has had a full spinal tap, where you lay fetal-position on a table and they shove a 6+ inch needle into your spinal-column and then extract fluid out your spine, which causes your entire body to recoil in response, I love Aaron's fear of needles...it gives me life ;) but hey...we all have our phobias :)

I think the weight of the Demo-dog has to be taken in to account. They seem light so they can be knocked away by something bigger even if they are more resilient. Unless you get thrown by bullets.
