This month I did something unusual for the Classic Fantasy Illustration. I worked from one of my tiny 4"x6" landscape drawings (instead of a final traditional drawing) to execute a much larger painting. This meant that I had to do a LOT of the drawing digitally before I could really begin my painting. (You can see the results in frame 2 of the attached Process Guide) I don't usually prefer to work this way, because I find drawing digitally to feel more cumbersome than the tactile feel of pencil on paper, but I was just really pleased with the little mini-landscape version so I wanted to try it for this one.
Overall it went really well and I really enjoyed the process! I was really pleased with how the painting was able to capture the essence of the concept drawing, which is something that often eludes me when I do a tight drawing in between the rough sketch and the final painting.
Anyway, I hope you like it! I want to try this process again, though next time with a more environmental landscape to see how it feels.
