Wow you are a moron. Why have them react to this show, when you can just tell them what happens. The whole point is they go to each episode without knowing anything, yet you decide to spoil things, I guess this won't make sense to you since you incapable of using your brain to process things.

Not Sundroll, Central. Central City. There's also an East city, West city, and North and South... and like a hundred cities and villages in between. The country is Amestris.

It may have been said already, but the biggest difference between the two shows is that brotherhood more closely follows the story in the manga. The original Fullmetal Alchemist started out very similar but deviated in their ending quite a lot since I don't think the manga was done yet. Brotherhood follows the manga storyline much more faithfully. That being said both shows are great, different endings aside.

The first series was made during the manga was still ongoing and got too far ahead, so it started making stuff up. This one is much more grounded in the manga's original story.

Based on Mark Watches, I don't think that's true--he went into FMA:B knowing NOTHING, loved it and had no difficulty understanding it. His feelings on some of the characters were a little different (pretty much didn't care about Mustang's squad except Mustang and Riza, for example), but still enjoyed the show.

I think that the 2003 anime followed the manga until it caught up, then it went in its own direction. FMA:B follows the manga more or less completley

IKR, we are either going to get people complaining about watching Brotherhood without watching the '03 version (which is not a bad Idea, but yeah you don't have to) or people bitching about not watching the Japanese version, and of course people whining because an anime won the 6k poll. Smh!

I still feel very strongly that in order to enjoy this show fully, you need to have seen the original FMA. Brotherhood assumes you have, so it glosses over some important aspects

Really excited about this! It's a great series. For an explanation on the two series, basically, when the FMA manga first started coming out it became popular very quickly, before the series was very far in. Kind of like if someone had decided to adapt A Song of Ice and Fire after only A Game of Thrones had been published. So while the beginnings are similar, the two anime series go in wildly different directions. Because the 2003 series had only a little of the source material to go off of, Hiromu Arakawa (the author and artist of the original manga) thought it was best for the 2003 series to have an entirely different ending. So, she gave the writers permission to basically do their own thing. The 2003 series is well-loved for a reason, but because of the way it was made it does have some issues with continuity and plot holes. Brotherhood more-or-less tells the manga's story completely, had a higher budget, etc. One could argue it does have some pacing issues at first because it goes through some of the material the 2003 series already covered more quickly. The manga is still the best version of the story in my opinion, but Brotherhood is an excellent adaptation, and I hope you all enjoy it.

Both series follow the beginning of the manga. The original series eventually deviated from the actual story once it caught up with the manga. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood speeds through the original beginning and then follows through with the rest of the original manga story.
It all becomes clearer over time.

So flipping stoked that you guys are watching this! This show was my life in highschool
2017-02-12 19:26:29 +0000 UTC
Been waiting for this reaction. Makes me so happy. Also the difference between FMA and Brotherhood is Brotherhood follows the manga directly while FMA breaks off halfway through and does its own thing as the manga wasn't completed when it was made. You're not missing anything major by not watching FMA first. However some people find the first few episodes speed over events too quickly compared with FMA in order to get to new content quickly but I think if you've not watched the original you won't be able to tell that much.
2017-02-12 19:14:45 +0000 UTC
For a reaction series, the dub makes more sense because it's less time reading and more time focusing on what's happening in the show.

To be honest we kind of lose something in the English Dub. The emotional inflection comes through a lot better for me in the original Japanese and english subtitles.

YAAAASSSS this is such a good show, I'm really glad you guys are watching it! It's a really good companion to Avatar--teenage protagonists, extremely well-choreographed, gorgeous fight sequences that combine martial arts with "magic" that has clearly defined rules, fun and colorful animation combined with a story that goes to surprisingly dark places. Plus Avatar is an American show set in an Asian fantasy world, while FMA:B is a Japanese show set in a European fantasy world. They just make really good companion pieces IMO.

Not a spoiler: the original show ran out of manga so they just made it up. Brotherhood is the complete story of the manga. So the first episodes are a similar story then they diverge later. Don't worry Shane your not missing out on story.

Don't worry about not getting a lot of lore/info yet. It all gets pretty well explained as the series goes on. As you said. :)
