I wanted to do another piece centered around one character with a bunch of stuff around him and figured it would be fun to draw another scene with the Doom Guy.
Sometimes I'll use reference, especially if it's a recognizable character. I find it helps pulling all the references into the piece you're working on instead of switching to another tab or scrolling through a bunch on another screen, you're able to go back and forth from the reference to sketch pretty quickly.
In regards to the sketch itself, for a big piece like this I'll always work in thumbnail size first to get the basic gestures before getting to bogged down in the details. Once the forms are where I like them I'll scale up the best thumbnail and add more detail. Once that's at a more understandable level I'll scale up the thumbnail again to the full size and begin work on refining even more.
As always things are subject to change - I'm looking forward to how this one turns out, stay tuned!
