Video Trivia! Devil May Cry 5 PART 1

I should be getting the "Making of" video done soon for $5 patrons. These are done section by section.

~~ Intro ~~

The entire intro was done as a last step (as is normal) but was the first part of the video that was written. They're done last so I can use all the footage from the video easily.

I had to @ everyone in my discord to gather impactful clips to use in the intro and for future videos

I literally installed Garry's Mod just because I thought it would be funny to have that be the first clip

~~ The Mushroom Kingdom ~~

Originally Vergil was planned to always play his theme in the background no matter what but I decided that would get unfunny fast. His theme music in the first scene is a remnant of this.

I learned how to Datamosh specifically for the "Bird is crashing" scene, and decided it was funny enough to keep forever.

Originally my friend Kyle was going to voice Urizen but I liked my voice for Urizen too much. His voice is really soft when it's as deep as mine.

Everything from the first mission was the hardest to write. It was a lot of introductory cutscenes in a row, which was very hard to frame as being funny or interesting. It was rewritten entirely once. Looking back, I should have cut the credit sequence scene.

I forgot to add music when discussing Nero's robotics arms, and my mother voices all of Nico's lines.

~~ Red Grave City ~~

Doing "Funny lists" to describe levels is the easiest way to frame what's happening in the level. It's very tempting to say "Nero encounters X, Y, and Z" for most missions but I refuse.

I consider the jokes I did to introduce Goliath to be pretty bad in comparison to my other antagonists. During the Goliath fight, I try to explain a little about the combat, but I quickly realized after that it was pointless to describe combat in such far depth (This isn't a review). However, I kept it in because I just wanted to move on and save time.

I screwed up and didn't get footage for Goliath originally. I re-recorded the fight on Son of Sparda difficulty. That's why I have a DT gauge.

It took me several attempts for all of V's scenes. It took me forever to get the voice down the way I wanted. It was very breathy and hard to speak at length, because I ran out of breath while speaking very often. When I say "Pardon my delay, I was catching up on some reading." that is a real line that V says.

I also consider the "My IQ is too high" joke from V to be the funniest joke in the entire video. It's just conventionally funny.

My brother, ChesterTheChest, is the voice of Nero. Originally, I had dubbed every single one of Nero's lines to give him direction for how he should talk, and he mirrored my feelings while adding his own flavor.

When heading through the sewers level, I tried to describe the level. It was very hard to write and was very boring. I decided it wasn't worth it to describe individual encounters and cut almost 40 seconds of (boring) finished footage. It's better now that I simply summarize it as "Nero heads through the sewers, and then out of the sewers..."

Everything leading up to Artemis was rewritten at least 3 times for being too boring. Having to do this mission made me question the quality of the entire video before I fixed it.

At around 6:43 the "Parrot" makes a datamosh noise that causes headphones to make a clicking sound. This didn't appear until the final product was already rendered, and I didn't notice it until it was already up.

I modded in a MLP book for V just for the funnies but it doesn't appear in certain scenes. It sounds like I hate V, but I really enjoyed playing him a lot.

I don't write or plan any jokes ahead of time, I simply think of them while editing. The Sears and linus tech tips jokes were just random thoughts. If I had edited the video on a different day, you would see completely different jokes.

During the Griffon glitch in the sewer around 7:43, I did my best to mask and track Griffon's glitch footage, but you can see lots of artifacts in it.

It was a serious challenge to keep thinking of funny reasons for Nico's van to arrive so quickly.

During the "Redditor boss" intro cutscene, I had to dub over every single sound effect except the last ones. This includes the stepping of the giant bird, and the portal warp noise is taken from Elite: Dangerous.

If the music isn't that good for a boss, I literally just use Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance music instead. The arch-redditor is one of my favorite bosses in the game since he appears twice, and I am going to give him Metal Gear Rising music for his second encounter in Part 2.

~~ The Sears Saga ~~

When I say "Meanwhile down the street" before I switch back to Nero attempting to get into Sears, that's actually just me copypasting my transition from earlier, voice line and all. They're identical.

The "You can't travel through here in a car" joke took me a very long time to refine and get the timing exactly right.

I had to ask 4 people on discord to voice to Oompa Loompa lines and it was VERY hard to get them to sync correctly, many of their mics are bad, and one of them is doing a Chills impression from Top 15s

The "I have rigged the stage to roll around like hot wheels" line and joke were literally because I could think of no funny explanation for why the stage rolls around

I want to work in a reference to Watame for every video as a running joke, which is what I did during the Angelo boss.

I think the cleanest most family friendly joke was the "I don't have time for questions" dialogue

~~ Qliphoth ~~

I contemplated cutting the "Imposter is sus/ stroke" part of my rant about Mission 08 for a long time but I decided to keep it in to scare people

I pissed off an Iranian guy in the comments section when I made a joke about the enemy being a Shia militant and I had to remind him that Hezbollah is Lebanese

I really like the fact that the game literally labels Urizen as being named Urizen when he says the line "My name is Kyle"

The entire "Lamar roasts franklin" rant that Urizen does during his fight with Nero was recorded in one take without writing anything down as the test dialogue to see if the joke would be funny, but I just kept the entire thing.

I rewrote Nero's "defeat scene" several times and re-recorded a lot. There was a really comedic version and a really serious version, and I decided that it would be impossible to play the scene totally straight or totally goofy due to the pacing of Dante's arrival and how Urizen addresses him, as well as me not being very creative.

~~ Morshu's Shop ~~

I saved all the jokes that I wanted to make for the scene that introduces Dante. I really wanted the viewer to get the idea that Dante was a chaotic and weird personality that doesn't give that much of a fuck. A bit like Bender from Futurama or Peter Griffin almost.

The "RTX Morshu" that I use for the phone call joke came out only a few days before I decided to do this scene.

I learned after effects tracking in order to do that blood splatter on the wall effect. Most of my tracking has just been manual.

I consider my narration and jokes in V's final level to be very bad in comparison to the rest of the video but I am ridiculously critical of my own work.

~~ Conclusion ~~

I adore the voicework that I did for V at the very end, and I think it fits perfectly- it has comedic phrasing like "turn into a slushie" or "Shishkebabing" but very straight delivery. I like to sell the idea that these characters just live in an absurd world, and I feel like it's important that we see them taking some things as seriously as the constraints of this universe allow.

Originally I was going to show Dante's first mission at the end, but the scene where V tries to stab him is a perfect jumping off point.

I was originally going to use Subhuman, Dante's Theme, in order to introduce him. However, it's much... heavier, than the other themes. It's straight up Metal, and it's better for being in the background than being the concluding theme.
