An Incorrect Summary of Devil May Cry 5 - Bonus Trivia

~~Intro~~

The intro is what I dislike most about this video, actually. I write the intros first, and then edit them last. That will be changing next video. Most of the stuff I talked about was deliberately confusing, but wasn't too accurate to what actually happened in the video, since I am less organized in my script writing.

I used a hololive MMD in the intro (sped up) to generate memes. Here's the source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0ts6kz1MG0

It was originally my plan to call Dante by different hispanic names throughout the video but I kept forgetting

~~El Exterminador de Demonios~~

The very first scene where Dante wakes up was lost due to a missclick and a crash, but I kept a backup because I rendered the scene to show my brother and posted it in the Patreon channel. It was only 10 MBPS, but I don't think anyone notices.

Ever since the beginning I wanted Dante's intro scenes to exhibit his insane personality, and I think that that is the best written scene in the video.

Throughout the video I use an incomprehensible mixture of my first playthrough and subsequent playthroughs of the game, figuring out which clip is which is a stupid idea

To have 50 enemies on screen simultaneously for a few jokes (the one where I explain Royal Guard), I had to install the "Legendary Dark Knights" mod for the game.

The Cavalier fight and dialogue is the only boss that I haven't rewritten even once. He is meant to be a parody of the "extremely online" people who obsess over winning fights on twitter and reddit.

I fought Cavallier 5 times in a row to prepare to get the footage of me parrying him, and make sure it was perfect.

My least favorite scene in the video is where V explains how he was created by Vergil. I cared about it so little that I made a mistake in the dialogue (I say "recanting" instead of "recalling") and didn't actually fix it because I was so done. It's pretty uninspired and contrived, so I just made up dialogue about Thanos as the single and only reference to Nino's Hotel Quest (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOxSDeSdPew)

For some reason  I recall the Urizen fight to be really difficult to edit. Primarily because I struggled to actually make it very funny after the beach joke.

The scene where Urizen explains how he is going to make his tree a national park to evade taxes was just made up for that scene, I didn't think it would be the premise of the entire video. Originally I planned for it to lean into the "child support" narrative much more than the tax evasion narrative.

I had to really heavily edit all of Urizen's voice lines by repeatedly moving them, cutting them, and abruptly changing volume at the beginning and end because the pitch shifter kept causing them to glitch randomly. It was hard to make them sound normal.

~~Qliphoth National Park~~

I may have said this last time but I kept running out of breath whenever I voiced V, he took several tries to get any of his lines sounding perfect.

The Michael Jackson scene is so absurd that I just left it in with minimal edits. Also, this is the first scene that Nero's VA makes an appearance in the video, 5 minutes in.

I literally did not use the Michael Jackson hat in my first playthrough and had to go back and record me using it for footage, which is why I look like I'm playing the game better.

I originally thought I would have to make up an ailment for V's scenes but I conveniently realized I set up that he had Scoliosis very early on in the video.

If there's anything I seriously regret, it is the voice acting I did for the Malphus boss (Giant chicken). It's just not creative, and it's the only way that I can look sort of consistent with the last video while only having like 3 lines.

When Dante descends the tree, I note that it says there's a player named "Fast gior ila" in the DMC5 online coop. That's actually my steam name! It was using a recording of me in a previous level and showing it to my present self. I set up this joke from the beginning unintentionally, I usually have awful and wild steam names. Don't tell anyone.

The "average sized pitbull" joke is one of my favorites, and the "pitbull throwing cinderblocks" joke made my brother laugh out loud when he first saw it.

I didn't actually want the Cerberus boss fight to last that long in the video, but I really wanted to explain all the modes. So as soon as I am finished explaining the boss, I immediately cut to how it dies. I also skip over the new weapon Dante attains, "King Cerberus" because I thought it would just randomly derail the pacing.

~~Tax Evasion~~

I have Dante address Urizen as "Vergil" once to hint that he knows that Urizen is actually Vergil.

the "How else can decent men gatekeep build a bear workshop" joke is one of those jokes where I cannot explain how I created it. Also, I have Urizen call himself "Jeff Bezos" as a reference to the AC7 video. Jeff Bezos in that video is definitely one of my most loved characters in one of my most viewed videos.

The Urizen fight that I narrate here is probably my favorite example of me narrating a boss fight. In truth, I have a very set formula for the boss battles, but I was able to throw in lots of interesting information that develops as the fight goes on.. Unlike others, where I would grow bored or lack funny things to say. You will notice this formula in that, for most bosses, I say the phrase "However, Dante CAN..." in order to signal that it is ending.

The scene following Urizen's death involving V was the hardest to write the dialogue for and voice. I just couldn't think of a funny thing for V to say when he combined both of them.

When V says "I know it's hard letting poor people into build a bear workshop, especially if they're Italian". It's because I'm trying to create a phrase that makes V sound racist, but not having any actual major real life parallels to real racists, or anything a very serious racist person could attach themselves to. The "italians" joke online is considered fairly tame, so I went with that, and it wasn't any less funny than something else.

~~V E R G I L~~

For Vergil's introduction scene, I had essentially been making the video up until this point so I could have the pleasure of editing it. It was just very fun getting the music to sync with his intro, and his subsequent silly slapfight with Dante was enjoyable. Some people consider this intro to be better than the base game because it uses Bury The Light, and I think I agree.

Ever since the first video, I wanted it to be a canonical thing that Vergil is always having his theme song play wherever he is present, and that he must manually turn it off. The original idea for Part 2 was that Vergil was attempting to escape his loud theme music, but that was scrapped when it transformed into the child support narrative, then into the tax evasion narrative.

When Dante reveals that Vergil is Nero's father, I originally wanted to put in an explanation, which was unfunny and got cut. Instead, it got replaced with Nero's meltdown where I screw up his face. The sound that plays during Nero's confusion is a distorted PS2 startup sound.

For the "Bowser squad" boss battle, the person who voices the "Lasagna" whenever the cat appears (Justyn23) specifically asked me to voice the cat, on the condition that he could only say Lasagna. However, the panther has literally no scenes where he speaks, because he doesn't speak in game. This is one of the only examples of me giving extra dialogue to something that doesn't have much, I almost always take away dialogue or context to abridge something with the vital details.

The "stop writing the script" bit was because I really didn't want to describe the rest of the fight. Sometimes your whacky and crazy idea is better than just going through the motions and doing something you don't want.

When Dante teleports to Vergil, it may seem abrupt but this is to disguise the fact that the game just fades to black and fades out again with him at the top. So, as far as the viewer in the base game is concerned, he just kinda teleports. It became part of the joke that they both just speak to each other as if Dante didn't just teleport in front of Vergil.

The conversation between Dante and Vergil had to be the most iconic for me. I wrote the entire thing out even before the Bowser fight. "You're going to pay, Vergil" and "I will never pay" are intentionally written to have a dual meaning, which hopefully makes it really beautiful and memorable. (Pay for your crimes, and pay your taxes).

~~I WILL NEVER PAY~~

I just liked the Vergil vs. Dante fight too much to narrate it. I felt like I needed it to be special and different from the rest of the fights, something the viewer could appreciate as what everything builds up to.

The clip of me fighting Vergil at 13:41 perfectly shows what this fight is about for me. Both characters are leaping around and doing crazy stunts while firing and attacking each other, it looks like a true battle.

When Nero receives a phone call from the government, at about that scene, I had thought out how every single scene was going to go. That phone call is specifically to set up both the conclusion of Vergil and Dante's fight, AND the ending of the video. Pretty efficient if you ask me.

I had a lot of trouble writing the scene where Nero confronts both of them. There were many ideas that I thought were in bad taste and threw out. Someone told me that it didn't make sense for Dante to be a committed IRS employee, so I thought that I would make them "Two sides of the same coin" and have Dante be revealed to have been posing as an IRS agent the whole time just to steal stuff. He's generally been extremely chaotic and unpredictable at that point, and seemingly performs actions and feats at random.

By the time that Nero fights Vergil, I was totally over narrating most boss fights. So, I sneakily made much of the dialogue of this boss not actually about the boss exclusively.

When Dante explains to Nero that he has to go to Florida and "Cut it off with a comically large saw" I only realized after I rendered the video that it actually shows Vergil's mouth moving, so that's probably confusing.

The entire reason that the "Antagonist state" that Vergil and Dante have to stop is Florida is because of the "Why do you think Vergil's going, there's no income tax" joke.

~~Outro~~

This is one of my fav scenes, it just feels elegant, fast, and to the point. It also ends on what I consider to be a really memorable line, where Nero states that Vergil "Might have had a point."

I had to once again conscript my mother's voice for Nico.

Originally I planned to show Dante and Vergil in hell, but I thought it would throw off the pacing too much, and relegated them to the credits. I was supposed to be wrapping up, not showing a hyped up battle.

At the very end, when Nero realizes "Vergil may have had a point" I don't think I realized this, but it's essentially Nero adapting to the insanity of the universe he's in. He was meant to be a straight man, and had been throughout the first part. But by the end, he shows that he's becoming more like Vergil or Dante because of the circumstances of outside actors imposing the insanity onto him, as well as the journey he underwent.
