I know you weren't talking about the law but 16 year old consent exists so people at 18 won't be charged if they are with 16. Same with 17&19. Not for people above 19 to get with high schoolers. So basically, it's all ok because Buffy has a lot of strength and Angel is poor? I love Angel as a character (esp on his own show) but this is aspect will always be weird to me. Especially since he "fell in love with her soul" when she 14/15 and eating a lollipop. She may be mature in a lot of ways but she handles a lot of interactions with Angel in a very teenager/immature way imo. The relationship feels too childish when one of them is not a child, it just will never not be weird for me or how people will justify it.

Yeah, I didn’t get the “but he (Edward) was in a teenagers body so it was okay” thing. Doesn’t make any sense at all.

Thought you might be interested to know that your Angel-is-an-angel theory isn’t that far fetched. https://instagram.com/p/B_4Zx8fjKQy/

I did. Thank you.

There has, but I don't want to bring up future episodes. I guess it's fair to say at this point, there isn't a definitive answer, but she is in a position to him. Than again, so is Angel I guess

Chris Hanley

Pretty much agree with this, except for the bit where you talk about relative strength, I don't believe the show has given us anything definitive on who's stronger. He saved her from the 3, she threw him out of her house (but I doubt he tried to resist).

Now let's talk about age difference ethics. I'm not going to go into age of consent laws, the average is 16 around the world, some even as low as 14. This isn't what I'm addressing. So, the main problem with age difference isn't about age at all, it's about power. Things to consider are wealth, intelligence, personal agency but most importantly; do they have a duty of care? Are they a teacher, guardian, sports coach, psychologist etc. In this case, Angel doesn't have this power in any circumstance, as he doesn't exist on paper, he's not apart of the human world. He's certainly not a sugar daddy, he looks like he barely has enough to get blood. Intelligence, well it's certainly interesting, Angel is obviously very intelligent. But Buffy isn't an idiot, and Angel hasn't been manipulating her, just protecting her. Now agency, hell no has Angel decided the trajectory of her life, she is the chosen one, that wasn't Angel idea and he hasn't tried to get her away from her life's calling. So is there any power discrepancy between Angel and Buffy? Well yes actually, but the scales tip towards Buffy having more power in the relationship. She is the slayer, it is her duty to kill vampires, and he does have a body count. She's also stronger than Angel, and it's not like she'd be charged for murder. So no, I don't feel weird about this, because Buffy has a lot more power in this situation than would normally be the case.

Chris Hanley

I'm still annoyed that they dropped the 26 yr old thing, because this was actually a retcon to deal with a visibly aging David Boreanaz. It's implied that he's older, but never how old, as they were hiding the reveal he was infact 240 yr old. Also, I do believe if the arbitrary age of the Vampires body was 16, no one would care as demonstrated with the success of Twilight. If Buffy was 50, Angel would still be 230 or so years older.

Both edits should be there. Do you see the full one if you scroll down?

I’m not trying to jump on you, but I think that’s WAY too far into spoilersville.

So even after becoming a Patreon, I am stuck watching your 16-minute reaction when I was looking for the "full-length" versions.

Bryce Carlson

First of all, I'm pretty old. I also was excited when Charmed started. It turned out to be at best an average show.

Allan Cornett

Chosen One Reactions is doing Xena; she is more than halfway through season three. Also, JuliDG has been requested (and paid) to do the entire first season of Xena on Patreon by a sponsor; she has done the first two episodes and is scheduled to do the rest of S1 through May and June. I have been requesting Xena from After Show and she has done the first two episodes. I personally love and would love to see Hercules AND Xena, and have been going through the Herc TV movies and will eventually add Xena (if I can) to go along with HTLJ by requesting them from Introvert Reacts. And I will try to get Liam Duke on that road if possible. So, there’s those. (SmttnPegasus also did the first thirteen episodes of Xena before she had to stop all reacting, at least for a time, but they’re still on YouTube.)

Koz

Too right, such an underrated and self aware show :) And in buffy, even the relationship with phoebe and cole was heavily influenced by buffy

Chris Hanley

I remember after watching Buffy, I was so disappointed in Charmed. I do wish some reactors would start reacting to Xena. It was also such a powerful cultural touchstone in its time, and like Buffy, managed both drama and comedy very well.

Richard Lucas

Had no idea Hill Street Blues did that! Can you imagine if old sitcoms did that? “Previously, on ‘I Love Lucy’ and they showed a scene from the candy factory?

Richard Lucas

I enjoyed this reaction so much, I had about 3 smoke brakes just to savior it haha Isn't it nice to know that a 31 yr old man can still relive what it feel like to be a 21 yr old North American girl. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is still some of the best writing on television in the last 2 decades. You see the influence of Buffy everywhere in teen drama and sci fi. It's a privilage to re experience it with such a cool chic.

Chris Hanley

Joss Whedon thought the "previously ons" were a bit spoilerly, so the American DVDs don't have them. I'm still a bit surprised to see them. I was surprised to find that "Hill Street Blues" was the first show to use the phrase, "Previously On," in 1982. It seems that genre shows (sci-fi shows like Star Trek or supernatural shows like Twin peaks) relied on POs, but serialized storytelling wasn't the norm back then.

Rachael

yoo really??? oh thats so cool!

Alley Box

"Previously on..."s were not particularly common in 1997, so that was actually kinda similar to my reaction at the time, too. :-)

AlyAdmirer

yeah, this is honestly really helping me save up money so i can support myself while going to grad school ill definitely treat myself a little once i graduate undergrad tho 😉

Alley Box

That sucks that you spent all that time and money working your butt off and you can't even walk. Hopefully, you can save up some of this Patreon money and do something nice for yourself when reality is normal again.
