edited version should be up later today

and just a quick thank you to each and every one of you that pledged to this patreon. I am absolutely blown away by the amount of support you guys have given me. I am now able to comfortably pay for things that before I was lowkey stressing about. I am also able to finally start saving money for when I go to grad school in the fall. This is all so amazing, and I can not thank you guys enough! :')

She's referencing high school...teenagers in drama class. Not college level

Amanda

A drama class is like 30 Cordelias? There must be a cultural difference between America and Australia. After studying (and later teaching) drama in an Aussie university I'd have to say - anyone who acted like Cordelia would be laughed at, and generally disrespected here.

James Garner

Also, Nic Brendan ad-libbed the Redrum scene. The Shining ref

Cheryl Coffin

oh thats PERFECT

This episode is strangely one of my favorites. Okay, scary story time: When I was 13 and over at my friend's house, she was playing a video game and I was facing the opposite way playing the piano. She suddenly yamked me by the arm into the other room as her dog started freaking out and tried to bite me. This dog was usually one of the most lovable dogs I knew. She put him in his kennel (in the room we left) and he just barks and barks. My friend said she saw something out of the corner of her eye and when she turned there was a little boy in blue she didn't recognize sitting on the floor and staring at her which was why she pulled me out of the room. The dog kept barking and we were terrified, so she turned on the tv, turned up the volume, and THIS episode of Buffy was on during a marathon. It was so cheesy and funny that it calmed us down. The dog went back to normal after 20 minutes but I was never in that room alone after that. Anyway... Cordelia being a human disaster in this one really made it for me. And the sheer reality of this one really got me. More teen supernatural shows need actual high school level embarrassment and awkwardness.

AJ Newton

Buffy's face when Willow charges off the stage is worth the entire episode. That was NOT in the script. Alyson Hannigan improvised it, and it is 100% perfect for shy dorky s1 Willow.

Ged Kelly

hey!! i do very very much appreciate this incredible offer! it is mothers day tomorrow and i promised my mother i would help her with numerous things this weekend for her. i will try to space out my reaction videos so i can post one every weekend since it looks like a lot of you would like that better :) i apologize, i cant commit to bringing another video this weekend, i hope you understand :)

Alley Box

lol I love Snyder. His lines in this are just too over the top be taken seriously. He's the anti flutie and they clearly didn't want the same type of principal and I'm here for it tbh.

Rockworm

No, that's entertainment!

Ed Badalucca

… there were definitely episodes I didn't particular enjoy in Season 1, but we're still about seven episodes away from the first episode of the series I actually considered "bad" on first run.

AlyAdmirer

oh man, id been skipping most of season 1 whenever i rewatch but this episode is much better than i remembered. Theres a great Buffy Podcast called Buffering The Vampire Slayer that's worth checking out if you're into podcasts at all its spoiler free and they just go episode by episode.

Vincent Valentin

I think we all have those. This isn't one for me, but I definitely have a few loved ones on the most-hated list.

FernWithy

I feel the same way. I dunno if it's the creep factor with the dummy, the twists, or what, but I really enjoy it as well.

Rainmaker203

I was at work when I saw you had posted this, and I've been looking forward to watching it all day! This is definitely another episode that is considered "bad" by many, but I actually kind of like it.

ModernArtery .

For some reason, I quite like this episode haha. But I can’t wait for you to get to season 2 lol

Phoenix Dawn

I now have PayPal.

Allan Cornett

Welp... if she doesn't wanna do it, I've got a wig, some black rimmed glasses, and enough editing skills to pretend I have as much wit as her.

Bisibia

Slappy was so scary xD sids fun. you can play as him in one of the video games lol

David Ingracia III

no such creature exists

Valkyrie

Be sure to read Juan Sanchez’s comment at the bottom. Even if you don’t have time to edit them for YouTube. Most reactors are a few reactions ahead on Patreon over YouTube anyway.

Richard Lucas

Best comment I’ve ever read! I hope Ally sees it. I love getting to watch reactions on the weekend because I don’t have to think about work!

Richard Lucas

It kept it out of my bottom ten.

Richard Lucas

Ya know, I think it wood have been a nice tribute to him to carve Sid’s body up into stakes so he could continue slaying demons (vampires) even after he was gone.

Richard Lucas

But he’s a good puppet!

Richard Lucas

THe only ones I usually skip are the two part opening just because it’s setup I know by heart. Ok and sometimes Teacher’s Pet. The rest usually give me something. 3) love the Amy/mom twist 5) Owen is so cute! 6) Flutie! 7) Achmed! 8) the things I listed above. 9) the ending

Richard Lucas

ITs funny because there are parts of the last episode I just love. The flashback, the tecnopagan term, the dark dark dark suicide section. There’s only one episode that just gives nothing whatsoever as far as I’m concerned, in season two. (yobelitper)

Richard Lucas

With Heroes being the only exception I could think of instantly off the top of my head.

Richard Lucas

If you tell me how I pay Alley other than PayPal I’ll kick in another $20.

Allan Cornett

Juan Sanchez

"Also i want to say that Your silence during a reaction does NOT mean it's a bad reaction, it means you are engrossed in the show and it's perfectly understandable. Don't feel you have to keep us entertained... " Totally agree. I just like watching people experience my favourite tv shows. If the reactor cares about the characters, that's pretty much all I need. If the reactor laughs, or cries, or is really observant, or witty, or insightful, or acrobatic... those are just bonuses.

UTU49

Sid is SO gross....Giles is SO killing it.....and new Principal Snyder is SO perfect in his ridiculousness LOL

SpikesEcho

thank you!! i appreciate the comment bc i am always super nervous to upload if i know i didnt say much 😅 but ive only gotten positive comments about the full reactions, so im super happy people are enjoying em :)

Alley Box

What I'm starting to realize is as long as you keep you standards reasonable, this season can be enjoyed. It's been a while since I watched Season 1 with anyone and I'm having fun. There's a simplicity to Buffy's sophomore year (Season 1) and episodes like this one and others like "The Witch" are clever, they keep you guessing til the end, Also i want to say that Your silence during a reaction does NOT mean it's a bad reaction, it means you are engrossed in the show and it's perfectly understandable. Don't feel you have to keep us entertained, we get enjoyment from watching you love this show as much as we do.

Michael Roach

He played them at the same time! the talent and range.

Shashank

With shows like Star Trek The Next Generation and Friends, it rarely mattered what order you watched the episodes in. Every episode started at Point A and ended... at Point A. Shows like Buffy helped to change that. Many shows nowadays have a progression from episode to episode. Episode 1 starts at Point A and ends at Point B. Episode 2 starts at Point B and ends at Point C, etc.

UTU49

Some aspects of this episode came up short.

UTU49

WTAF? I haven't seen that before. (Unless I saw it 15 years ago and forgot.)

UTU49

I like it too. My favourite thing about it, however, is that, in addition to the things you mentioned, I was actually sad when Sid died. WTAF? You guys made me care about a ventriloquists dummy? Kudos. That is a decent accomplishment.

UTU49

The Œdipus King scene is my favorite part of this episode, I tend to skip this episode except for that part x)

Lonelyjesse

I wonder if you can post a reaction to your thoughts on season one at the end and guess what season two has in store.

Allan Cornett

Like I say WWBD.

Allan Cornett

yeah!! I couldn't put it into words but definitely!! like the concept was cool but the pacing made it seem so out of place in this show

Alley Box

Your reaction to the curtain going up at the end of this episode was my favorite part. I like all the elements of this episode. They just haven’t figured out the pacing quite yet. This episode is too slow, which makes for an interesting low budget 80s horror movie but not the best Buffy episode.

Shashank

Yes, it's one of my favorites to rewatch because it is just so fun.

Tom Tattershall

Only spoils Season 2 haircut.

Jeffrey

OMG! Can't believe that!

Abby

Oh yes, big fan of Spaced and Simon Pegg. I’ve never done that but the Buffster is my moral compass

Ryan

Thanks. Had you seen this before?

Allan Cornett

At least for the first three seasons, if you had cable and WGN, you were in luck. Over-the-air was more hit and miss. It wasn't until my local FOX affiliate struck a deal that had them carry WB programming on late night tape delay a few weeks into Season 4, after WGN dropped the WB Network from its national feed, that I had an over-the-air option to watch the program.

AlyAdmirer

Totally not a spoiler and will help her understand us Buffy fans better.

Ryan

Here is Jenny Calendar in real life: "After having appeared in more than thirty music videos and toured in a six-dancer troupe with the Pet Shop Boys, LaMorte was picked by Prince to be one of two lead dancers for the music video for "Cream", a single from his 1991 album Diamonds and Pearls.[1] Prince had originally sought identical twins, but chose LaMorte along with another dancer, Lori Elle, because of their similar appearance and the dance chemistry they had with him. Elle as "Diamond" and LaMorte as "Pearl" subsequently appeared in the videos for "Cream", "Gett Off", "Strollin'", and the album's title track, as well as on the album's holographic cover itself. LaMorte and Elle then toured Europe with Prince, and when he temporarily refused to do any public speaking, the two girls served as his spokespersons and conducted the main promotional efforts for Diamonds and Pearls. Elle would later go on tour with Ricky Martin and Michael Jackson."

Jeffrey

This is one of my Candy episodes, it has its flaws but I love it to bits

Ryan

Those who have watched "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" may recognize that the actor, Armin Shimerman, who plays Principal Snyder in Buffy, played Quark, a Ferengi, in that show.

Mark Zima

Buffy wasn't available in every market in the USA . I moved around a lot during the first few seasons and I was always worried that the show wouldn't be airing where I moved to.

Allan Cornett

This episode was actually intended to develop some (otherwise) minor themes. One is that while there ARE other demon-slayers in the world, there is only One Slayer in each "generation" and that Sid actually knew one in the past. Another is Cordelia's self-infatuation and that Xander knows how to handle her. You also get the first indication of just how special Willow actually is. Few people these days realize that it has only been recently that television has gone from being Episodic with each episode being fully contained and having little to do with any other to being Serialized in which a season-long story arc has become that A-plot rather than relegated to the C-plot.

Bryce Carlson

stiff performances all around. only exception was that one background character who really acted her heart out

Anastasia Bartocha

Is that meant to be a pun?

Roger C Lackman

I personally found the acting in this episode a bit wooden...

Renee Rials

This one is definitely a cheesy one off, but it's one I enjoy. The introduction of Principal Snyder, Giles using Xander's trick to get Cordy to leave, the terrible credit scene of Oedipus, Cordy's terrible singing; there's a lot to enjoy here imo. And honestly, after the last episode (which I typically skip because I don't like it) this episode is a big step up. You're closing in fast on the end of the first season and I am loving getting to be here for your journey through it all.

Liz Siron

lmaooo im sooooo slow when i watch things 🤦🏻‍♀️ its kinda sad lol

Alley Box

This one is usually in my bottom five episodes of the season. Not that there’s anything glaringly wrong with it (well, except for the horny man trapped in a dummy hitting on teenage girls aspect) but it’s just rather...boring? Idk I just don’t vibe with it all that much. I tend to skip it on rewatches despite some funny comedic bits sprinkled throughout So very much looking forward to more, Alley! Can’t believe we’re already so close to the end of season 1!

TheLoungingPotato

I'm dreading watching this, despite how ridiculous and goofy this episode is, my fear of puppets is still stronger lmao.

Valkyrie

Yea, Giles didn't seem to put it together until they were pretty deep too... Kind of reminds me of the Pack when the Zookeeper is tying Willow up but being casual about it so she doesn't realize what he's doing til it's too late.

Bisibia

I appreciate how long it took you to put the guillotine and Giles together... like it was pretty obvious, but also kind of over-obvious. Seeing it click for you... that was a moment!

Ed Badalucca

This was fun. I don’t know why I’ve been skipping this during rewatches.

Brandon Ross

Or next day streaming. :-)

AlyAdmirer

I actually like this episode. How I feel about Buffy. https://youtu.be/CU20idhRAwI Fellow patrons watch this first and confirm it’s not a spoiler. I want Alley to see it. It’s only 21 seconds long.

Allan Cornett

Counting "Welcome to the Hellmouth"/"The Harvest" as the single episode it was broadcast as, this was the second episode I ever saw. Couldn't get the show on campus at school, and no torrents in those days... :-)

AlyAdmirer

Snyder's "I don't get it. What is it? Avant-garde?" is still everything 😂 Just for that reaction and that last scene this episode is awesome! I actually always liked it. It's the right amount of creepy and cheesy and fun. Plus you really get some hilarious exchanges, my favourite being Giles using Xander's method to get rid of Cordy. It might not move the plot forward but it's fun. Miles better than previous episode.

DB

That line made me LOL at my desk at work. She's got that effect on her audience!

Ed Badalucca

It's grest - it's witty. gives Giles an anti-authority slant to his character and introduces one of the funniest characters in the show. There's almost never a scene that Snyder doesn't steal. ("It's that kind of woolly-headed liberal thinking that leads to being eaten.", "There are things I will not tolerate: students loitering on campus after school, horrible murders with hearts being removed, and also smoking.")

Dave Ford

Even though some of the thriller episodes are okay or bad in Buffy, i like the diversity in monsters like you said. I watch SPN too and like you said, about all of the thriller episodes are the same with the same monsters. But there are some really good thriller episodes in Buffy, and as you continue through the rest of the seasons after Season 1, you'll see them. I'm sure people have already told you that season 1 is the weakest, and yes it is, but almost every first season in every show is their weakest.

Dhevian

Haha, well put.

Brandon Scott

Sid being revealed as “Yes, alive... but a decent fella” is one of the great swerves, in my view. And it’s Buff teaming up with another warrior for good,, albeit tiny and wooden, which is really cool. I really like this one and I am suitably geared up for the remaining three of the season! 🤟🏻

Koz

Sees Sid at the window. "what's that little bitch doing there" i almost choked on my coffee

Nick Velasquez

Of the lowest rated episodes of Buffy (of which this is one), it's fun how divided people's opinions still are. I love watching reactions to s1 because one reactor will love I Robot, You Jane and hate this one, or like this one and hate the Pack. Not sure I've met anyone that loves Teacher's Pet, but some find it passable while others wish to scrub it from their memories. If I'm gonna skip an ep in s1, it's probably NKABOTFD (ep 5), Owen is just way too much. Campy 90s horror will always get a thumbs up from me.

KT

I like this one

Nicholas J Hoover

Eeehhhhh..... lol, this is one of the shakier eps.... :/

Brandon Scott

Woot - I loved ths episode in the context of S1. It absolutely shows how good writing and character work can turn arround a plot that, on paper, is even more stupid than the previous episode.
