Buffy the Vampire Slayer || 1x10 || Full Reaction

Comments

So the Buffy Summers character was born the same year that I was and in the show they graduated HS the same year that I graduated so this so was so up my alley. I find it really interesting seeing someone a generation below me react to something so iconic from my high school years. Although ironically it wasn't super popular among male viewers when it was airing, It had a much larger female audience so I was only able to talk about it with my female friends. I look forward to seeing your take on all the societal differences of the nineties compared to when you were probably growing up. The only thing that would have been better is if one of your parents grew up on the show and you watched it with them and then had a discussion about each episode but this is great too.

Greg Davis (YT-nobody you need to know)

Okay, first off: You are precious, this show is going to destroy you, and I'm excited to see it happen. Welcome to the Whedon family, we're all horrible, twisted people with big hearts. Secondly, if you havent already done it (and you may have) please please please get mods for your comment sections and get in contact with other reactors. SesskaSays watched all of Buffy back in the day and she just started reacting to Supernatural this month. She's on 1x03 and has no idea of what is to come for the Winchesters, but she gives excellent advice to other reactors and she is actually the one who got the first of these peeps into reacting to Buffy. TorchwoodBoy was the first youtube reactor to watch Buffy, and he started the trend. He has finished all of the Buffyverse and is current (ish) on Supernatural, AftershowReacts has finished the Buffyverse and is on Season 9 of SPN. Liam Catterson and Liam Duke are on s4 and s6 respectively of Buffy and they are a pair of insightful sweetie pies

Jean Olenick

hey!! i apologize but it most likely will be up tomorrow! im trying to figure out how to fit this into my new schedule with my classes and me recording friday, and editing then posting saturday is my best option to be somewhat consistent. sorry to get ur hopes up! :(

Alley Box

We should see another Buffy video today. Whoooohoooo

Allan Cornett

Loved this! I love your reactions to this series. This episode is my top 3 of this season. I feel like it is one of the best monster of the weeks episodes in the series because we learned so much about all the characters. My goodness, your reaction videos are so freaking entertaining!

Kim Meier

This batch is for my wife, who went vegetarian last year - so it starts with Beyond Meat's hot Italian sausage, and eventually I intend to work in some meatless meatballs. For now, tho, marinara makes her happy!

Ed Badalucca

ooo yes! my ancestors would be proud ☺️ love that! my mom has made about 4 different pots of sauce since the quarantine has started so i know the food too well now

Alley Box

I was inspired to make a pot of tomato sauce (what we in Brooklyn call "gravy") after your wonderfully surreal Italian vocabulary lesson in today's video! That lead to me making this short clip that can only be called Goomba Zen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8BJmPsb59o

Ed Badalucca

I figured! Just giving you grief! ;)

Ed Badalucca

A certain amount of privacy is a good thing but the HIPPA law went way, way overboard IMO.

Tom Tattershall

I feel I should also observe that this episode featured the appearance of one of my favorite extremely minor speaking characters: “Way Cool Guy,” his actual credited name. It’s about honor!

Koz

i get tired 😭

Alley Box

yeah lol, i looked it up and totally forgot how it was only written in like 1996, and enacted in 2003??? WHAT. so back then anyone could just say anything in a hospital😳

Alley Box

You might be surprised to discover that HIPA is a fairly recent concept.

Bryce Carlson

Joss was notorious for getting in close with his casts. Throughout the run of both Buffy and Angel he routinely had varying numbers of the cast over to his house where they would put on little makeshift performances of some of Shakespeares finest! FunFact: That's actually how he came about making the movie Much Ado About Nothing. He just sort of called up a bunch of people from these shows and from his other show, Dollhouse (which you should totally react to, by the way) and they shot the whole thing over a just a few days at his house.

Brandon Scott

Don't feel bad.. This is an actual "ship" in a more fringe area of the fandom, lol.

Brandon Scott

The yawn @ 37min - I'm sorry, are we boring you? (j/k)

Ed Badalucca

What a very good one this episode is! I personally enjoy Buffy’s helping young Billy in more than just a save-you-from-a-monster way, because it shows her to be not just a good fighter, but a good person. That’s why Buffy really works as a hero. 👌🏻🦸‍♀️

Koz

Not an accident everyones loves you, half of us watch Buffy reactions as a hobby in its own right. Love all those guys, but you're still the best.

Chris Hanley

We are one more episode closer to the end! Cannot wait.

Phoenix Dawn

Yeah this is one of my favorite episodes from season 1, and I think you hit on why at the end. It cuts from being very funny to creepy to heartfelt really well, and reaches a lot of different emotional notes. It’s like it’s part comedy, part drama, part horror movie, and good ones at that. Sometimes at once- the killer clown bit was both kind of scary and funny at the same time. And the fears and nightmares were pretty relatable- I’ve definitely had something like the test nightmare before. By the way, you notice that the end credits scene for the last episode set up Willow’s nightmare in this one?

Arnold Kim

So the part where Buffy got buried alive was a real fear Sarah Michelle Gellar had and they used that for real like there's a point where she's not even acting anymore.

Rockworm

Ohhh I see. I get the picture pun intended. I couldn't do that if I tried lol love the reacts keep em coming.

Juan Sanchez

This is one of my favorite season 1 episodes, been looking forward to this!

Jenn Rose

It’s really no different than introducing a friend of yours to your favorite movie, which they had never seen before. A couple of years ago I found out that a good friend of mine never saw Pulp Fiction, one of my favorite movies. So I told him “Dude, you gotta watch Pulp Fiction with me!” And we sat down and watched it together. Just watching the movie myself was only half the enjoyment, as I had seen it several times. The other half was seeing him enjoy it for the first time, along with me. That’s kind of what we are doing with Alley, except we pay her. We are not just watching her watch Buffy, we are watching Buffy with her, albeit remotely, and seeing her watch something that we love, for the first time. I don’t think it’s that odd when put in those terms.

Arnold Kim

The second half of this episode is definitely better than the first, in my opinion. We get deeper into the Scooby gang's fears but none more than Buffy herself. Although, Giles' are also pretty terrifying in their own right. But I swear, whenever Sarah Michelle Gellar cries, I cry. She's so good at it?? Only two episodes left!! I am so excited! And congrats on the 1K/month! We told you making a Patreon with the BtVS fandom would be profitable haha

TheLoungingPotato

our mans do me lookin Fresh 😳 and thank you!! glad u enjoyed it :D

Alley Box

"maybe its multiple choice... oh no its written." Everyone knows Buffy flunks the written ;)

Vincent Valentin

This reaction was great - might have been my favourite one so far. It's so exciting thinking about all the amazing episodes and moments to come. Also, I am absolutely here for the Giles thirst. That man can rock a tweed suit.

Shandler

mine was the later callbacks that I never connected before, namely one of the major fears/nightmares. lol. it's so hard to talk to each other about this without giving spoilers.

Lindsey Metcalfe

It works for me

Richard Lucas

Why have I never heard of this ship??

Richard Lucas

Yep, something Giles says in this episode (it was written by Whedon), and something Alley said that I hadn’t really picked up on before.

Richard Lucas

1) it looked like your Tik Tok was shipping Giles and Angel. That’s a new one for me but I can dig it. 2) if I had to pick my top 3 episodes of season one, it would probably be 12. 10 (this one), 7. 3). That scene with her dad is so brutal!!!

Richard Lucas

And as you so eloquently pointed out, on the streets Giles will not hesitate.

James MacDonald

haha I try my best ;) and thank you so much!!

Alley Box

Last episode was puppets and this episode is clowns, season 1 really is coming for me. A good episode for the gang, cool concept that the monster this week was just a shitty human.

Valkyrie

so I record my reaction on a camera, upload the footage (where I show the screen so I can sync it up) and then in my editing software I put in a download of the episode on top and then sync it up :) p simple! it is a lot easier bc the audio is cleaner and its better quality than if I recorded my screen/let the audio play instead of using my earbuds

Alley Box

That's so cool I don't understand how she can show us her laptop she's viewing and we see Alley with the episode square on here. I'm not really technology savvy. Wonder how that's done.

Juan Sanchez

The full reactions are great!

Superfan Giovanni

Those syncs always being so on point is oddly satisfying. Kudos to the success of your channel, it's well deserved.

Todd Bell

Totally agree. I thought the Laura character and the Wendel character were both well written and performed. Much more interesting than most minor characters.

UTU49

Honestly I found it very easy to interpret it either way. Mackenzie Rayne is a reactor who ships Angel and Giles.

UTU49

I love character deep-dives. Buffy's in particular were horrifying on different levels. Being buried alive is so humanly horrifying that I could feel my anxiety spiking as it was happening. I think I could start headcanoning based on every single one of these dreams, even Cordelia's fear of being a "loser". (Because who even is this character without all of her nice things and people to fawn over her? Or is it that she's afraid of what people will think if they knew she might not actually be as big of a ditz as was possibly suggested during Buffy's history nightmare? I have no real, logical reason to like Cordelia but I do. Let me have this. )

AJ Newton

Alley: "I'm way too hyper." Us: "Well duh. That's why we're watching you."

UTU49

It is very dated. I remember the first season being good. It is the first show I can remember having a season arc. I can't recommend it because I have revisited some shows I loved and on rewatch I was horrified at how bad they were. I don't know if that is true about Wiseguy because it's impossible to find so I have never rewatched it.

Allan Cornett

I've been loving reaction videos for over 2 years now. I'm still not sure I completely understand why we all like doing this so much. A big part of it is just that reaction videos are the next best thing to watching your favorite TV show with another person who is enthusiastic about it. If your family finds it weird, you could tell them that reactor videos create a sense of community around our favorite tv shows. Also, you're frickin hilarious. Hahaha! Yeah! Tell your family that this random weirdo on the internet wants them to know that you are frickin hilarious. That'll show 'em. lol. (My sense of humor is weird... even to me.) :(

UTU49

thanks!!! and listen.. giles be hittin it 😳 what a mans

Alley Box

yeah it was great!! and idk why i didnt think about that till now, this was the first time buffy saw him? thats such a great introduction of him to her visually and yessss i need to hear that song more often, i love it was too much

Alley Box

I ran out friends and family members I can force this show on to years ago. It’s especially nice to patronize someone who has actual life goals beyond this, so I’m more than happy to chip in.

Ryan

That tik tok was fire! Finally Giles is getting some much deserved love for his hotness and style :)

Shashank

WOW! That's so cool. Also I laughed way to hard at your Tik Tok ...... The Plot: GILES! LOL

Saint Mercy

I love this episode too... it's kinda monster of the week, but it also teaches you more about the characters, and Buffy has now seen what The Master looks like in person, so it has importance. Also, Everytime We Touch is perfect outro music and I might have to steal your idea for my channel.

Bisibia

Yaaassss Giles thirst. Thank you so much for posting. 🙏 This was the exact pick me up I needed today.

Acacia

oh goddd joss is cruel 😭😭 haha, oh man

Alley Box

oh i do that so i can be sure its synced up while editing :) ive been doing it that way for a while since i listen with headphones and cant sync that way (easier to edit)

Alley Box

I figured it was for her own editing purposes afterwards, easiest way to make sure it's lined up.

KT

hahahaha oh god i didnt mean it to come off as angel/giles i have a running joke with a friend that giles is the hottest one lmao, so i edited them both together, not in a relationship way haha

Alley Box

thank you!!! it’s definitely still like that haha and im going to graduate with a BS in psych and a minor in biology. im hoping to then get a masters in psych with an emphasis in biology to then hopefully be a PhD candidate for neuroscience.. yeah its a lot but it can change 😅

Alley Box

Yes! Finally a kindred spirit! Only waited 20+ years for someone to be as excited about Almanzo as me haha

DB

BTW- You probably don't need to do the laptop to camera thing - most people wouldbe syncing with the audio track rather than the video, I suspect.

Dave Ford

Willow's fear of singing is possibly down to Joss asking Allyson what her fears are - she is not a good singer and has publicly stated singing in public would be one of her nightmares. Not sure if Nick Brendon is actually scared of clowns or Nazis.

Dave Ford

You're the only other person I think besides me that knew her dad was Almanzo cause I watched Little House religiously as a kid. So happy you knew that.

Kitty

That 'Tuesday' quote is used in a WW2 era book about the Inklings - the literary groups that used to drink in a pub together in Oxford that included CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien - the line is "There goes CS Lewis, it must be Tueday".

Dave Ford

I like the scene when Laura was beat in the basement. The actress really did the small role well giving a great horrific terror scream and the scene is take dark as it stands iconic moment remembered in the Buffyverse. One of the well loved things about this universe that no one else does well is how really really it can tap into dark moments and then be super witty funny. As Buffy fans know this show has real really life lessons instilled into it as joss and the cast have repeatedly said. And it's helped me deal with personal demons in life. It takes school situations even adult ones and shows us how to deal as it manifest problems into monsters, demons, lurking evil and Buffy shows how to deal. So yeah. Laura did good for her basement visit. She's up there in my top five Buffy victim screams in this universe. I always remember the extra characters because some I wished had longer roles. Time for my patent watermark signature 🌻💙⚡👑 #Goddess #SecretCrush

Juan Sanchez

Good episode! Slight confused by the ending. Are you fangrling over Angel and Giles, or are you shipping Angel/Giles? Enquiring minds really aren't sure they want to know.

Dave Ford

I've never heard of this show, I have to check it out somehow! Was it actually any good?

DB

Oh and your love for Giles is precious and completely justified. I'm also wondering when it'll be appropriate to expose some early pre Buffy ASH projects to you. They might involve stockings and very non Giles like roles lol

DB

Finished watching. It's been a while since I've seen it (I usually skip this season when I rewatch). It's one of the good ones of S1 IMO. Again it doesn't necessarily push the plot but unlike some other monster of the week episodes it does give a nice look into our characters psyche. I love the mix of very mundane typical teen nightmares like forgetting to prepare for a test with more personal ones. Did you notice a call back to Cordy's hair last episode? Some fun facts: Aly doesn't like singing so this is played up here. SMG had a real fear of being buried alive, she even begged for the scene to be changed thus Buffy's reactions here are genuine SMGs reactions. Ok this one was dated even back then but I did love old tv as a kid so recognised him immediately: the actor playing Buffy's dad was Almanzo Wilder on the Little House on the Prairie. Yes, that realisation made me feel 50 at 16 lol Sorry this is so long. Last thing I promise. I find it interesting that Xander is pretty much the only one who confronted his fear. And kudos to him. I'm still working on my coulrophobia (thanks, Stephen King and Tim Curry!)

DB

lol I just realized some things about much later in the series that I didn't before and I have watched it all literally at least 30 times.

Lindsey Metcalfe

This is going to make my last hour at work fly by. Thank you :)

David Ingracia III

Love your reactions! I Patreon'd for your full early reactions, but will also probably watch the YT versions for the sick edits, too.

Kitty

I'm glad to be able to help! When I was in college ever little bit helped. I'm guessing its true even more so nowadays. Out of curiosity, what I you thinking of studying, if you have even decided yet? Anyway on to the episode!

Saint Mercy

Another great reaction! I loved that this episode explored our main characters a bit through their fears. I’m actually kinda glad they didn’t have Angel in it though because I do not want to know what kind of insanity might have been unleashed on Sunnydale with his nightmares.... Also I am living for your love of Giles. I mean honestly, same.

Liz Siron

thank you so much!!

Alley Box

haha thanks!!

Alley Box

Super proud of you girl, congrats on the success =] Also, Andrew Ferchland (the Anointed One actor) popped up in my Facebook suggested friends today. I don't know what to make of that.

Rachel Espiritu

i love how in just about every video, you've said that you're "way too hyper." The energy is great, lol, don't feel like you need to tone it down at all

Anastasia Bartocha

I've tried searching the origin of the phrase "It must be Tuesday" but haven't had any luck. Buffy used to air on a Tuesday and she has used that phrase...

Jeffrey

thank you so so much!!! :D im so glad you like em

Alley Box

Wooooohooo

Allan Cornett

i guess the way you could explain it to them is that this series is pretty much allowing people like me to recapture the experience of seeing the show for the first time when I was around your age. it's a nice nostalgia trip, like watching someone younger than you take on a hobby you had passion for when you were younger.

Anastasia Bartocha

Buffy did give the name Big Bad to that trope. An interesting fact is that the only show I can remember that had a big bad for every season before Buffy was a show named Wiseguy . Every season the same cop went undercover to take down just one big bad for the whole seasons. Yes I am old...LOL The first big bad for the first season of Wiseguy was a incestous brother and sister heads of a crime family. The brother was played by Kevin Spacey.

Allan Cornett

You're a badass editor, make sure they know that :) When my partner and I watch your videos we LOL when you nail a prediction or an upcoming quote by a character. We know just about all the dialog by heart, It's been really enjoyable watching someone watch this show for the first time.

Jeffrey

I didn't know it came from this show but thats so cool!! im so used to saying that when I watch spn, but I love how Buffy was the origin of that!

Alley Box

Yay! Just started watching your reaction and you used the term Big Bad! Did you know this show named that trope? Anyway will comment more later.

DB

of patreon? they still find it kinda weird that people actually want to watch me watch a show but they're happy im actually making some sort of income off this hobby I have had for 3+ years 😅

Alley Box

What do your parents make of all this?

Jeffrey
