Buffy the Vampire Slayer || 1x11 || Full Reaction

Comments

That's one of the beautiful things about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is Whedon can have a standalone episode, but still add something into the overarching plot, and have it all fit.

Tim Pierce

great reaction can't wait til the next one!

Pho3nixX

i mean.......... he makes everything clear ✌🏻😗

Alley Box

I love your second paragraph. :)

UTU49

you have very quickly become one of my favorite reactors. I love ur energy and excitment. like looking forward to the next openig for the 2nd season. thats always my favorite part of starting a new season lol. Also the show is finally about to start for real

David Ingracia III

lol I think the only time you weren't completely confused or freaking out this episode was when Angel was on screen.

Rockworm

Just joined your patreon and so glad I did, I love your energy! I am a big fan of supernatural too, but Buffy is my all time favorite show. I have seen it in it’s entirety an embarrassing amount of times 😂 I can’t wait to see you progress thru the show, I think you are going to be amazed at how good it gets!

Kelly Keel

I forgot this episode even existed and I am cackling laughing at that baseball bat just knocking a dude the fuck out, ridiculous but just like most of S1 fun regardless.

Valkyrie

Goddamn. You honestly have the best reactions to this show ever. All the others are fine but they aren't as animated as you...you're ACTUALLY giving a full reaction, not just watching. It's honestly me when I first watched it in 1997 and it gives me so much joy to see that the show has held up so much. I can't even wait until you get to the great stuff because this isn't even close to the very best of the show. Please do 2 vids a week!!! I'd even support you more!!

Allan

I'm a big fan of you reaction videos, It's really cool to see someone appreciation and excitement to learn something you already care about. I didn't remember how good this episode really was, which gets me really excited for you to see the future storylines and the highs they are able to achieve. Fun Fact: If you read the page that Marcy goes to in the Assassination Manual at the end of the episode what it says it's actually the lyrics to Happiness is a Warm Gun by The Beatles

Stanley Zapata

Got it. I should have known a fan would know that. You can’t blame the skeptics after all the show has a silly name.

Allan Cornett

No, I’m well aware of that. I’m referring to the reception to the show at the time it originally aired. That is, critics watching the first season in 1997, and so forth. Even when they praised the dialogue or what have you, they had to make it clear that this kind of show was silly.

Koz

You are very sweet. I think a show about a high school girl slaying vampires is more believable than Supernatural and you don't SLAY me.

Allan Cornett

Actually BTVS is on many critics list of all time great shows. Hollywood Insider list of 50 shows you should see, Buffy is there. TV guide list of 50 greatest shows OF ALL TIME, Buffy is on the list. IGN list of best 100 TV shows, Buffy is 39. Empire Online list of top 100 shows, BTVS is number 8.

Allan Cornett

@richard, sorry, i meant online lectures. no one is requiring in person

Alley Box

haha i totally get it... it took me like most of season 1 to really get into supernatural

Alley Box

Your reaction was epic in this episode, thank you so much. And your debrief, i could feel the passion in your voice and even see it in your eyes, that was awesome. I can't wait for your finale reaction and for season 2.

Nikho_Ronin

Beat comment EVER. I tried so many shows hoping to find a show that was close to how good BTVS was. I failed.

Allan Cornett

Yes. I requested that earlier. Please do. It’s fun to look back at your predictions and see if you got anything right.

Allan Cornett

You love Supernatural so if some parts of BTVS remind you of Supernatural it makes sense for your comments to reflect that. I tried Supernatural but I compared it to Buffy and was very disappointed in the show. I couldn’t get past a few episodes. I know this sounds crazy but Supernatural didn’t seem real and Buffy seems real to me.

Allan Cornett

I actually like this episode quite a bit.

Phoenix Dawn

I think we might need a Holy Water Boy to fight it

Richard Lucas

REquireing you to be at lectures, that seems pretty shitty and dangerous right now. Please be careful. I thought all schools had gone online now

Richard Lucas

"Every good villain needs a tune." LMAO!!!

Phoenix Dawn

I am loving your reactions and that you get so excited about stuff. To me, this episode was kind of a filler, but you seemed to love it, which gives me hope for future storylines that you will enjoy.) I hope you fall in <3 with Buffy and company like we all have :)

KiwiJello

Clea DuVall was so good in the show Carnivale. A show that’s fallen into obscurity as well. I too find the rise and fall of recognition and popularity a VERY fascinating thing.

Shashank

The one thing I am endlessly floored by with your reviews is your boundless enthusiasm for even these "lesser" episodes. I mean, you can see a lot of Buffy fans love every minute of every ep, but damn, some of this first season can be a hard slog. And you tore thru it like a wet paper towel - It's so crazy to think that the show *only* gets better from here. The soundtrack, the budget, the guest stars!!! I'm also taken aback by the passage of time. When this episode came out, no one knew Clea DuVall, who played/voiced Marcie. Two years later, she was a really big name in Hollywood, appearing in well-known movies and TV shows. And now, she elicits no reaction. The march of time has relegated her to a footnote. She was a bit-part character, which became a *cameo* role when she was famous, and now she's a simple bit part again. It's fascinating, truly.

Ed Badalucca

Love how much you notice the sounds... It's one of the things that drew me to the show, but it only gets better going forward.

Bisibia

This has been my favourite season one reaction-experience by far. I like the energy and effort and the ability to appreciate a low-budget thing from over 20 years ago for its strengths.

Hans Olav

The use of sound in this show is so, so good. And, while I think there should've been more lead in to the finale, the last few episodes leading into it are legit just really good episodes with loads of fantastic character moments. Ahhhh I'm so psyched for you to see the season one finale!

AJ Newton

Clea DuVall is wonderful in everything, but one of her recent roles that I particularly love was the hilariously deadpan Marjorie on VEEP.

Rachael

Alley - you can make a poll in Patreon to ask us.

Dave Ford

The two shows that shaped the last 20 years of television the most are Buffy and the Sopranos and it drives me nuts when critics only cite the Sopranos, which very much deserves its acclaim. But when critics try to act like Buffy wasn’t one of the driving forces of the Golden age I get angry, I used to argue with them, now I just post links to the Passion of the Nerd for them. (Which is not something you should check out until you finish the Buffyvrese Alley)

Ryan

Yes please, love season wrap up, review and predictions videos.

Ryan

Both the creators of Lost and the new Doctor Who said they used Buffy as a blueprint when creating their shows. Buffy’s influence is beyond fantasy shows from shows like Empire and many dramas. In an interview the creator of the Wire[my second fav show] said for him Buffy is the best show. I think the overvaluing of the Sopranos [which is good] and the undervaluing of Buffy is rooted in which stories [teenage girl growing up, troubled mob boss] get treated as worthy of our admiration and sympathy. The same kind of valuation leads to the mobster genre being seen as a prestige form and fantasy as b cinema. It seems Buffy is getting more and more credit over the years, which warms my Buffy loving heart!

Shashank

okay, i wasnt sure if that would actually be something you guys would want! but if so, ill definitely look into it :D

Alley Box

Once again, I loved this reaction. The enthusiasm you bring to the table is truly contagious. Watching you watch Buffy absolutely takes me back to my first times through these episodes and the excitement I felt back then. I can’t wait for the finale

Brandon Scott

Who doesn’t like you mentioning supernatural? Not me. Another one of my favorite shows of all time. Bring it up whenever you want.

Brandon Scott

I forgot how good this one is! So many things happening. I absolutely loved Cordelia's reveal of how she really feels. Granted she didn't seem to change her ways much. Also I have a thought about the FBI guys but can't share it yet cause spoilers!

Saint Mercy

This is the first time I noticed that when the teacher compliments Cordelia and says, "It's nice to know that someone's done the reading," Willow is standing behind her and rolls her eyes. Lol, the shade.

Rachael

UTU49 - that was a joke that even Xander was embarrassed by.

Dave Ford

BTW - Next Saturdays video should absolutely be review and thoughts on what you felt about S1.

Dave Ford

to me, i think he did it as to not get her hopes up. she is young so if she heard they saw angel but he didnt stick around to see her, that would Crush her

Alley Box

This /|\_ What Ryan said. Absolutely.

Dave Ford

Of course - Even in the nineties - no one at school would have been able to get away with wearing the miniskirts that SMG got dressed in but the costume director - especially when they were 16. It's interesting to watch how the fashions change as the characters age in the coming six seasons.

Dave Ford

My internet's been absolutely fine - it's just onehub, and it's just for the hour or three after Alley drop's her Buffy reactions (though I've never downloaded anything else from them) - it's fine now.

Dave Ford

Woot - the download is now good in the UK (And, hopefully, the RoI) - liked your analysis after the episode - but the one question you didn't ask was: Why did Giles lie to to Buffy about how they got out of the basement?

Dave Ford

I like how this takes a straightforward plot and gives it layers through counter intuitive character layers: Cordy who’s the “popular girl” is shown to be a diligent student with some emotional depth the ignored student is presented sympathetically in flashbacks and then layered by her subsequent vicious invisible behavior. At the end we get Marcie being trained to be used as a weapon, the uses of evil by those in power. Cordy gets to express gratitude while still being the Cordy we know in her final scene. It’s the little character choices that really make this episode better than the plot summary. For some reason this comment isn’t showing up, so I’m reposting…sorry if it shows up twice

Shashank

I love your reactions. I really miss having a show like this and I love that you get to experience a show that portrays a young woman finding her way in the world who just happens to have superpowers. As others have said, next season is when it gets even more amazing and I think will make you wish we had a show like this today😄

Other Boy Reactions

Do you know why that baseball bat attacked that guy at the beginning? It's because it was a vampire bat. :/

UTU49

I think what Buffy and the Sopranos really gave to television. Is that what’s important isn’t the monsters or the murders, it’s the characters and the exploration of them that makes a show great. As for Law and Order I would say falls more towards The Wire on the spectrum of great shows. Those shows explore the Systems that society is built upon and their positive and negative aspects on us all.

Ryan

I think you're starting to see that Buffy is miles ahead of those shows that followed it. In the inferior shows that came along in its wake, if the plot called for an invisible girl, she would have been under a spell, or have found a magical amulet, or something desperately obvious like that. Not BtVS; it takes one of the bitterest, most hurtful things a teenager can imagine and turns it into an actual curse. The way BtVS writes of the terror and pain of teenage high school life by incarnating them as actual literal horrors is genius.

Ged Kelly

You are so much fun to watch! Your enthusiasm has made me fall back in love with Buffy! I watched this episode when I was 8/9 because my older sister had the box set. My mom didn’t want me watching it yet, but when my sister was babysitting she would let me watch it with her. Anyway, this episode scared the mess out of me- I thought their were invisible people all around for the longest time!

Meredith

I feel like Sopranos and Law & Order in conjunction launched the crime/procedural drama tv genre, while Buffy was responsible for the whole fantasy fiction drama genre.

Lindsey Metcalfe

Man I am so psyched for the finale, and psyched for you to watch this series in general considering how much you've been liking this first season. Also when you posted that Angel and Giles vid and clarified that it wasn't a ship thing, I immediately thought of that scene between them in this ep and how flustered and bubbly Giles was. Ngl I lowkey ship them.

KT

The penultimate of season 1! You've trudged through! This is one of the better ones of the first season too, I've always enjoyed it. Love your Giles love!! He deserves it! Principal Snyder and Cordelia are so perfectly awful, they're great. SO looking forward to you entering season 2......it's an ENTIRELY different level.....you're gonna be a goner!! A little disconcerting to learn that you're used to happy endings on Supernatural.....oh boy....LOL It's so cool how this is helping you during school, I wish I'd done that....feels like I'll be paying off my grad school loans foreverrrrrrr, blah.....probably should have picked a field that pays LOL, but that's on me, hahaha

SpikesEcho

I loooove this episode! Along with The Pack, I think it's the best use this season of the "high school horrors as monsters" metaphor. And it's so relatable. The scene in the girls' bathroom and the classroom scene are so sad and something just about everyone has experienced at one time or another. And hello, character development for Cordelia! I could do without the secret agent subplot, but it does make for a classic horror conclusion. And in a weird way, it's probably the best ending Marcy could have hoped for. If she can't be "revisibled," at least she's not alone.

Pam Nail

Without Buffy the Golden Age of television doesn’t happen or at least happens very differently. Yes Sopranos is the real lynchpin show, but only a handful of shows followed that model. Far more great shows have more to thank Buffy for than the Sopranos. Without Buffy genre television would never have found room to grow.

Ryan

While I would love to think of having an ep a day I hope you pace yourself and set up a schedule so you don't get burned out. Go at your own pace - we love it no matter what :)

Patrick Lyke

that's that mystery solved then, I'm from UK with virgin media too. I initially thought it might be that because they have definitely been awful lately but like mark my internet connection was fine.

Inseriousity

I'm so excited to see how she reacts to season 2, particularly all the different character developments. I laughed when she was a little offended at being forced to empathize with Cordy. And when we get to her also watching Angel... ugh! I can't wait.

Lindsey Metcalfe

I kinda like the Supernatural comparisons, because so many people who watch Buffy for the first time now just think it's so corny and trope-y and outdated (as if it didn't come out 23 friggin' years ago of course it's outdated) without knowing or acknowledging that shows like Supernatural wouldn't exist if Buffy hadn't paved the way for them. Seeing someone who gets that and can make the comparisons keeping that in mind is honestly really refreshing to me.

Lindsey Metcalfe

im glad you're enjoying em!! :D

Alley Box

I can't eloquently express how much joy these reaction videos bring me, thanks for making them!

Superfan Giovanni

Your enthusiasm is infectious, loved this reaction and seeing it just makes me so excited for when you get to the parts of this show that makes this episode basically just an above average episode of Buffy. One more episode to go and you’ll be there. For the record I have no problem with you mentioning Supernatural, that’s a great show and of all the Buffy clones it’s by far the best, so please make all the connections to you want. And don’t worry about being slow on the upload schedule, school first, Life second and Buffy third, priorities are good.

Ryan

Absolutely loving your reactions, I eagerly look forward to the release announcement each time. :) You know, people say Season 1 has a few cheesy episodes, but I’ve never thought them to be all that bad; especially considering that this show was breaking new ground. They’re all still fun. More importantly you’re learning about the characters and the lore, and this show is all about the characters and falling in love with them. You’ve already become attached to Buffy and Willow and Giles - and Angel too, haha - it’s fun watching you get an eyeful of him. ;) Therefore the show has already worked its magic. :) So from that perspective, even the filler episodes are good. Greatly looking forward to the finale, and Season 2!

King Author

it all depends on the professor. like one of mine is doing live lectures but posting a recording of it so we can still watch if we miss it. another requires we all be at lecture at a certain time, and then another just posted the assignments and information and told us to get it done by the due dates... yeah its a lot to organize bc its all very very different edit: the classes are all online

Alley Box

I love how much you love that one. This is really good for several reasons, including how its use of metaphor gave something for even the snootier critics to praise, since they normally couldn’t take fantasy shows seriously, especially the ones that were part of the big fantasy-action wave at the time. But screw critics anyway! Angel shows up, Cordelia reveals a layer, Buffy has a badass martial arts moment while fighting with her eyes closed, there’s secret government activity and you had one of the coolest reactions I’ve ever seen. A good time was had by all! (You know Marcie may not have felt invisible had she had her own reaction channel.) 😁

Koz

This is one of those episodes that really captures the shows central metaphor that high school, or rather adolescence in general, is hell. The show is really good at taking the intense drama of growing up and making it into literal horror. Love to see you really getting into this episode. I think it really does have a little of everything- development for Cordelia of all people, a good villain, a little bit of setup for the finale. I do like that they have a villain with a sympathetic backstory, but that doesn’t make what she’s become any less of a monster. “You know I really felt sorry for you. You suffered. But there’s one thing I didn’t factor into all this. You’re a thundering loony!” That line says it all imo.

Arnold Kim

Don't worry, you're not the only one fans do that to, it drives me insane! The Supernatural/Buffy parallels are fascinating and abundant and worth discussing without the constant reminders that Buffy very obviously came first haha

KT

It's nice to have a schedule, it keeps us from getting antsy :) Is your university/college doing online lectures at the moment? I imagine there's a lot of disruption.

ThatGuy11200

Agreed! I love when people compare and contrast Buffy with other shows. It's so cool to see how things that were originated or made popular in Buffy have influenced other works. And let's be honest, Buffy has influenced a LOT of other shows.

Liz Siron

haha, its mainly people on my youtube that get annoyed/insulted whenever I relate the show to something I know like I don't already know that Buffy came first 🤦🏻‍♀️

Alley Box

oh goddddd, I totally forgot about that.. yeah, I can see how she would be driven to this

Alley Box

Soooo excited that we’re THAT much closer to finishing this season! Also, no idea who’s complaining but as a Supernatural fan I love the compare and contrast. Buffy has a huuuuuge influence on a ton of other shows and it’s interesting to dissect it in relation to them.

Acacia

The thing to remember about Marcy is that she spent weeks, if not months, completely alone and without human contact with only herself and her revenge thoughts for company. I'm pretty sure the original Marcy would have never done something like that but she was driven crazy by her isolation.

Lonelyjesse

I'm in Ireland but yes with Virgin Media! Absolutely awful service from them lately :(

Mark

That's fabulous! Thankyou so much! No need to apologise -it's hardly your fault Virgin Media is a stinking pile of dingo's kidneys.

Dave Ford

I love LOVE LOVE your bubbly reaction to this series! I'm so glad to have joined your patreon and CANNOT wait to see what you think of season 2!!!!!!!!!! If you loved season 1 then...giiirl, buckle up because Season 2 will literally blow you away!!!!!!!!

Patrick Lyke

Alley - that's so sweet - maybe worth investigating if Google Drive is better - I'm not sure it's any better experience, but they do seem to have a mature and robust distribution platform.

Dave Ford

I am with you in absolutely loving this episode. The whole Marcie plot was WILD, especially that ending. We got a little bit of Cordy character development, a little bit of main plot moving forward with Giles and Angel, and some great Principal Snyder lines. I absolutely love your reactions even when, or maybe especially when, you're rambling. You get so into it and excited that you have trouble fully articulating your thoughts and I can relate. I'm so excited to see your reaction to the finale!

Liz Siron

Yes, I've got a download speed of currentl 14kb/s - which will take 3 days to download theifle. Mark - are you in theUK by any chance? On Virgin media?

Dave Ford

I skip most of season one when I do a rewatch. I had forgotten the Angel parts in this episode and how important they are. Another entertaining reaction.

Allan Cornett

sorry, im uploading it to mega right now :( its just taking a while, I really apologize about it

Alley Box

You crack me up in the best way possible! If you're this excited about an episode that is good by S1 standards, I cannot wait to see your reaction to some of the future episodes! This is imo first glimpse of more complex villain on this show IMO. Marcie is a character we can empathise with, but just because she's easy to pity or identify with doesn't mean she's actually a good person. I had to IMDB it to be sure but yep, that's Clea DuVall playing her. She's been in a lot of projects, she's really good.

DB

Sigh. 31Kb/s from Virgin media - I'm going to askfor a refund at this rate.

Dave Ford

man I cannot WAIT for you to see the next season.

Lindsey Metcalfe

That was great. I really did not expect that reaction to that episode. Can’t wait for the finale now :-)

Paul Thomas-Humphreys

oh yeahh, my barbie was stylin' back then lmao. and yesss, omg the principal's lines are absolute GOLD

Alley Box

Your Barbie had that same outfit because that's peak 90's fashion right there 😂. Also "there are no dead students, this week" and "don't sue" are the best quotes of this episode, no competition.

Antonella Ricco

No need to be sorry! Take your time, thanks for helping us out <3

Mark

oh my god, im so sorry! ill upload to mega and see if that helps you guys

Alley Box

Same for me too, strange I don't normally have issues with onehub. My usual workaround of just downloading it when eps don't work is apparently going to take.. 28 days. I mean I enjoyed the episode too but it's not that good haha

Inseriousity

oh man! I uploaded it to the website yesterday so it should be fine, and its not buffering on my end, but pls hmu if it continues and I will see if its something else! :)

Alley Box

Excited to watch the reaction! Just keep doing your best. If we have to wait longer for videos in the future, they'll be worth it!

Paul Komoroski

Whoooohooo. School obviously should be your primary focus. Thanks for the new video.

Allan Cornett

Does the video keep buffering for anyone else? I've tested my internet connection and it's fine, the video keeps freezing every few seconds though :(

Mark

Yesssss! Been waiting for this one! Love your reactions, queen 👑!!
