Buffy the Vampire Slayer Talk || Season 1

helloooo, so sorry bout the late upload on this one, but its a lot longer than normal so took a while. let me know what you guys think of this format and if I should continue doing em each season :)

also, I got a LOT of questions from you guys so if yours wasn't answered, sorry! I ended up with 1.5 hr of footage so I had to cut a lot out to make it a reasonable length haha

and this a more rambly type video, but a lot of you have said that you like that so hopefully y'all enjoy!! thanks :D

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Talk || Season 1

Comments

Yes please do that!!

Hannah Weber

At the very end of the series it would be hilarious if you went back and did some reactions to your reactions because just so much happens.

Colleen Elizabeth

As someone who knows this series like the back of my hand these reactions are so golden and I can't wait to see the later episodes

Kobe

Hey! If you ever had any desire to meet the Anointed One himself, we have a Q&A session coming up! https://facebook.com/events/s/q-a-with-andrew-ferchland/251663516085430/?ti=as

Rachel Espiritu

Well, when you created your Patreon I decided I'd join as soon as you get to Season 2, so... Hi! :D

Khanach

This is our support group

Andres David Valencia

If you have a problem, I have a problem. I don't think it's a problem. ;)

Patrick Armbruster

Had to jump on the Patreon cuz I am SOOOOO excited for you to see Season 2!!!! I'm hyper.

Diana

I’ve watched Buffy from start to finish 4 times in its entirety and the last 4 seasons about 10 and now I can’t stop watching reactions to it. I have a problem.

Victoria Jordan

Alley, I wanted to suggest one thing. If you have completely unlimited storage space, ignore this, but if you don’t, you might want to remove the edited versions since they are posted on YouTube any way. Some reactors have had to remove early season vids because of lack of space but I would rather see the edited ones (still on YouTube) go than for that to happen.

Richard Lucas

@Anastasia Bartocha, omg thank you!!! some of my old spn video are Wild 🥴 but im glad she enjoys em haha

Alley Box

I always make sure to share your vids with my friends! My best friend is a huge supernatural fan, and I think she's binged all of your Supernatural vids at this point.

Anastasia Bartocha

thank you so much for wanting to help!! the main thing is to like and comment (more interactions on videos makes youtube suggest my videos more) and just share them with any buffy fans you know. and im not sure about the views thing, i might have to look it up but thanks again!

Alley Box

Mostly in his season overviews I agree. I just recently re-watched his s1 discussion with exactly that question in mind as a prelude to suggesting it.

Jon Freezin-Rain

Slightly off topic but we're in that "between seasons" lull so I guess this is the place to ask - what can we do to help you grow? Now I'm subbed I watch your videos here, but I still go to the Youtube versions and play them for a few seconds at least, and hit the thumbs up. I'd appreciate if anyone knows how long you have to play a video on YT for it to count as a "view", by the way - I'd hate to be doing this wrong. But what else would help you prosper?

Ged Kelly

If you are looking for good things to react to, my suggestions would be, in rough order from most interest to least: RWBY (Especially since they let you put full eps on YT,and you can suddenly have another mass subscriber influx) The West Wing (Because nobody else has and it is excellent, only TV show of all time I but on or above BtVS level) Different music including anything from Tom Leher to Babymetal Firefly (Because JW) Star Trek TOS (Because it set the stage for everything else) StarGate SG1 (Because good TV, decent reactor community) Dragonball/Pokemon/Naruto/FMA or other popular Animes you may not have already seen, because they will help draw new people, and are good for understanding some social memes.

David Neal

We Buffy fans are conversationalists at heart. We love talking about this show, from the feels to the philosophy to the flaws. There are so many academic publications on Buffy and I actually considered a university based on the fact that it had a Buffy class. Thirteen year old me just wanted to be a Buffy expert. We're chatty, definitely. We love welcoming new people into this crazy fandom that just won't die, especially those as enthusiastic about the journey as you've been. This was the show that showed me a new path and that, both because of and in spite of my circumstances, I always have a choice in my future. Thank you for reminding me what it was like to watch it for the first time all over again. One season down, six to go. Happy trails.

AJ Newton

Rambly type videos are perfectly okay with me. :) Since the seasons are longer from now on, I wouldn't mind sort of a half-way rambly-type video after 10 eps of season 2. (I've chosen 10 for a reason, of course, even though it's not exactly the middle.)

Patrick Armbruster

I can't wait for season 2

Rock and Roll Joe

i did watch a couple episodes of that when it first was popular like 4 years ago and couldnt get into it, but i will definitely look into it again, bc i don’t remember the eps i watched haha

Alley Box

@Lisa Mendes, i do little clips of jokes/reactions/thoughts i have over on my instagram story (jaredpadalick) and i will be compiling them each season and post them on youtube :)

Alley Box

You are PURE GOLD!!!!!

Pho3nixX

are you doing vampire diaries reactions?

Pho3nixX

Actually, I understand that Joss Whedon almost cast Charisma as Buffy before SMG auditioned. This could have been a very different show.

ropecrewman36

I actually started watching this show when I was in college and I already knew a few Giles's, at the time so he instantly became a favorite when he showed up. That said...there are some incredible characters you still haven't met, so I (sadly) understand why some folks have him outside their top 3 (He's still my second favorite right behind Willow). We'd be curious to hear about your favorite characters in future season wrap-ups.

ropecrewman36

But her character is young

Andres David Valencia

Ok. That line "that would be glorious" (@16:30) actually scared me. At least I am awake now :)

Anitusar

In the French version they're even called "Bienvenue à Sunnydale partie 1 et 2" ("Welcome to Sunnydale part 1 & 2")

Lonelyjesse

I think "Orphan Black" would be an awesome show for you to react to, though you might have to pixel out the occasional naked butt shots.

Kenny Teeology

Cordelia is supposed to be how Buffy was before becoming the Slayer. BTW, Charisma Carpenter was 27 during this first season so she belongs in the "old actor character dating young actor character" icky club with Angel 😁.

Kenny Teeology

A few years ago they actually shut down Harvard University for a week and had a "Buffy Summit". Scholars of all types descended on the campus to discuss and present papers on the show in all subjects. Including psychological studies of the characters, it's effect on pop culture to this day, and it's social commentary, plus many other things. You are awesome! Can't wait to see what you think of season 2.

The Movie Guru

Everytime you put in that 'a child' clip in your reaction, I laugh way too much. Quality work 😂😂

Candice

That is awesome, so I might be able to have a reaction on my bday x) Buffy reacters got me into rewatching the whole thing again. Such an awesome show. I cant watch the original English version here in Germany. German audio sync is quite good, but of course I enjoy watching the original through full reactions. It even got me into ordering the comics which continue the story past season 7. Actually, they are kinda relaunching the buffy comics since Spring 2020 with a somewhat altered storyline in a "present" timeline. After finishing the "old" comics (season 12 finished in 2019) I might take a look at those. It's great that "Buffy" after all these years is an ongoing phenomenon.

Inb4close

I would hold off on watching Passion of the nerd for now as some of it can get a tiny bit spoilery.

BHillzebub

On many shows with teen protagonists, the adult characters are decisively treated as unimportant. For example, did anyone ever care about the parents on Dawson's Creek? I love that Giles and Joyce were more like full characters. Especially Giles.

UTU49

hah i had the same thought

Nicholas J Hoover

(Might record yourself watching it, and then decide if it is worth editing/posting for a reaction or not)

David Neal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXlfXirQF3A This is about publishing in mathematics, but close. (Also, if you don't already know who Tom Leher is, you could absolutely react to the above video, and probably get some good and very different views on it)

David Neal

aw man, i wouldve loved a giles spin off 😭 and thank you!! and yes, this is the “saturday slot” that normally would be a reaction, im planning on recording tomorrow so i can edit it and have it ready by my usual tues/wed slot :)

Alley Box

Make sure you cite her and publish it, She really wants to be cited apparently.

David Neal

YAY I am so glad you're enjoying the show. I can't wait for you to get into season 2!

Rockworm

To be fair, BtVS also killed off the female lead, they just had her get better. I don't think this is a spoiler, as it never happened, but at one point there were talks about a spinnoff focusing on a young Giles (the details would be spoilery) but it, sadly, never panned out. I am really looking forward to your reaction to S2, S3, and beyond. You are currently the only person I'm supporting on Patreon, after telling myself for years that I never would. (But as you may remember, I do send money directly as one-time "tips") Is this video taking the place of a reaction in your release schedule, or are you going to have S2E01 sooner, since there was, potentially at least, less editing required to produce this?

David Neal

I also thought you were studying something related to films. You give us such good production values and you have both the hardware and software to do it.

Eric Haefele

Liam Duke is great at getting deep into his analysis, which I think of as scholarly in many cases. And I do love his reactions, but he doesn't bring the energy and sparkle to his reactions that I love with Alley Box. And Alley Box brings more production value to her reactions. She really gets into playing around with her video creation software. And I love it.

Eric Haefele

thank you so so much!! that means a lot :’) and absolutely, i will keep this up! cant wait to continue the journey!

Alley Box

I really enjoyed this and I hope you continue to do these at each season's end. I have watched a lot of reactors and, for me at least, you are in a class by yourself, on a whole different level than any of the others. I hope that you continue to enjoy sharing your reactions with us, and that life's unexpected twists and turns don't get in the way of this journey that we are on together.

Eric Haefele

What I find interesting about that is that Willow has experienced vampires taking over places like The Bronze, but school is Willow's world. It's where she excels, where she seems to spend the most time, and sadly, where she is bullied. Willow is an academic, but school also seems to be her home, where she's found new friends, and where she feels safe. Buffy may not share those feelings, but she can empathize. She's willing to sacrifice herself to preserve Willow's (a normal girl) world.

Rachael

yes! someone mentioned that they filmed this not knowing if they would get a s2 and i think they did it really well. they tied up all the loose ends but kept it open enough for future development. and yessss, i will definitely be watching their stuff soon!

Alley Box

If time permits you may want to look at analysis videos from 'The Passion of the Nerd' (YouTube). They flesh out some of the same points you raised in your overview As you noted season one left no loose plot threads, mainly because it was a mid season replacement show so all 12 episodes were filmed before ep 1 even aired. It's a stand alone story as no season 2 was scheduled.

Jon Freezin-Rain

oh goddd yes, idk why i keep forgetting that scene, but again, i shows how dark the tone of the show is getting and oooof, it is such a good scene

Alley Box

yup! i realized they aired the same night after my first video and ever since then, i group them together as the “pilot”

Alley Box

In your review/analysis of episode 12 you neglected to mention the scene with Willow where she tells Buffy that it wasn't her world any more. They made it theirs and they had "fun". That one word "fun" the way Willow said it, that for me was the most emotional moment of the episode. Even more than the part where Buffy tells Giles that she "quits". She doesn't want to die.

Eric Haefele

Pausing at only one minute in to commend you on treating the first two episodes as one. "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and "The Harvest" aired together as the premiere (both written by Joss Whedon). I think the pilot is incomplete without seeing both episodes.

Rachael

This was such a great review of the season! I'm 100% with you and your love for Giles, the man has got it all. Veryyy interested to see you look back on this video and the expectations you had when you finish season 2!

Emma Ash

Oh and you need to check out SMG's Instagram...she recently posted a pic of her wearing the same outfit from the S1 finale (since you love her outfits) :)

Patrick Lyke

I am SOOOO HAPPY you loved season 1!! This season gets knocked because of how "dated" it is from being in the late 90s but it really has it moments that you can love even now! CANNOT wait to see you in season 2 (and yes, have tissues on hand because some episodes will rip your heart out...just sayin')

Patrick Lyke

thank youuu!! and yes, its super interesting to look at the show psychologically!

Alley Box

lmaooooo too real 😭

Alley Box

This is the perfect show for someone who studies psychology. Loved the review. You are definitely one of the best reactors for this show, I am glad that you are enjoying this so much just after one season. Can’t wait for you to see what’s coming. And Giles is the best.

Vicky N

yeahh! someone else mentioned papers written about buffy that i will definitely check out once im done with it and yes, i am more interested in the neurological basis of psychology but more in the sense of “what happens in the brain that causes this behavior?” bc i really enjoy studying behavior as well. like the one lab i worked in studied how people with anxiety have a higher neurological response when they make errors and bc of this response, we can use it as a test for children in order to diagnose anxiety earlier and help get them the treatment earlier. (lol that was a lot, but thats what im interested in, how the brain and behavior interact) and yesss, i was surprised to see a lot of comments on my video for the pack where people were kinda shocked to see such an effect on me, but that episode reeeaaally shows whats in store later in the season and its a Lot

Alley Box

Publish or perish! LOL

Thom Purdy

As an academic, once you finish the series, you can enjoy many academic treatises on Buffy (including stuff by psychologists, though I suspect more comes from sociology). :D Heck, as a plain old people-watcher of the civilian variety, I enjoy watching reactors go through the same series and see how differently they react. Sometimes there's an outlier, and I was genuinely shook when a reactor saw a scene where everyone else was against... well, we'll say Character Q... and this guy said, "Hell, yeah, I'm with him! No WAY anyone should be siding with Character B!" Just random things that are interesting. Though it sounds like you're more into the neurological study than the behavioral stuff. I agree with you about "The Pack," for the record. It had its weak points, but it was the first time we really got to see that the show was willing to Go There with its plots, that they weren't going to back away from their own monsters.

FernWithy

thank you so much! i feel honored haha. glad you’re enjoying em :D

Alley Box

omg thank you so much!!! in high school i loved film so i researched it a lot, so i do have basic knowledge about it, but ultimately due to how my life is rn, i never pursued it, but it is a big passion of mine. so im glad that i am able to point out different stuff!

Alley Box

Let's put it this way, you're the first person that I've actually donated to on Patreon. I enjoy your reactions quite a bit and wanted to see the full episode ones as there's some pretty crazy and cool stuff coming in this show for you. Buckle up.

Jason

Woooow these predictions are giving me life! I cannot wait to see you get through next season!

Rachel Espiritu

You are selling yourself short about your ability to review shows. I've watched a lot of reactions and you catch a lot of small details in the way scenes are setup that I've never noticed or seen anywhere else. I honestly thought you were studying something related to films.

Andres David Valencia

Giles don't get enough love. Being the grown man in the teen gang had to be tough. His patience with Xander must mean he's a saint

Andres David Valencia

As someone who grew up with an abusive addict dad in my house, I absolutely loved Giles as the kind of father figure I wished I actually had. I absolutely have used some Giles words of wisdom in my actual life to help me through too.

Liz Siron

While Giles isn't my absolute favourite character, I usually tie him for second with another character. I first watched this show when I was very young (I'm a 1995 baby lol) and growing up I looked up to him a lot as a strong father figure as I didn't have the best father figures in my life. I would find myself in similar situations that the show deals with and I would turn to Giles for guidance and it always helped at least a little with whatever I was going through.

HookedOnSwans

haha, yeah i can barely pronounce regular words that i use everyday, so glad i gave it a good try 😅 and thanks!! i love reading research papers in journals and the fact that one day someone might cite something of mine with my last name is so cool haha. and thank you!! i wasnt sure about the format but im glad a lot of people are liking it :) and yesssss i cant wait to see more of her outfits lol

Alley Box

Thanks for answering my question about your favorite TV shows, and the fact you tried to pronounce my name ....props because people find it hard...I sympathize and it was close. It’s cool you have such a tangible goal to publish in a scientific journal....you really are Willow! Also a great video and format for these season reviews. I particularly liked the question and answer bit and how quick and succinct your answers were. Buffy’s clothes are a show and journey in themselves, so that was great and I hope you do those every season :)

Shashank

ur totally right! i love listening to other people talk about their lives so i get yall wanting the same here haha and danggg! wheres all the giles love 😭

Alley Box

I've recently learned that other people always tend to find your life more interesting than you do. I have a few friends who do theater and while I think their lives are super cool and interesting, they apparently think the same thing about my boring life as a nurse. I think people are always interested in something outside of their norm. Giles typically isn't top 2 for most, usually 3rd at best, behind Willow and sometimes Xander. I've always had a great love for Giles, it's just nice to see a reactor who does as well.

Liz Siron

Honestly looking forward to seeing her reactions to her own expectations from this vid almost as much as the actual eps.

Lindsey Metcalfe

The best thing about making predictions and wishs for season 2 is looking back at them after the season is over.

Allan Cornett

thank you!! i find my life lowkey kinda boring but i forget you guys only see what i put in videos which is such a small fraction of my life, so im glad yall r interested in it :) and yeah!! is giles usually not a fan favorite for other reactors? bc he is such a surprise to see and i love his depth and development

Alley Box

oh noo 👁👄👁 im so scared but also so excited

Alley Box

thank you!! i tried to film this a couple days ago and stopped 30 min in bc i felt like i kept repeating myself. videos that arent in the same format im used to tend to be harder for me since i have no backbone to work with, so im really glad you enjoyed :)

Alley Box

Oh, I just read your comments at the top - I thought this might be a tougher video to make than the episode reaction - but I think you did incredible well - very insightful and I'm really glad you took the time to revisit each ep. Loved the fashion rundown of B's outfits at the end too! Well done.

Dave Ford

This was a great review of the season! Like others said, don’t worry about the length of these videos, we will sit and watch reviews that are 3 hours long no problem. Also thanks for answering questions about yourself. It’s nice for us as your audience to get to know you a little better. My fav answer was you ranking Giles as your number 2 fav character. I’m glad I’m not alone in how much I love that man. As for some of your predictions? 🤐🤐🤐 Can’t wait to see how you like season 2!

Liz Siron

More ominous laughter at some of your answers about what you want out of season 2 in terms of plot and character development. Number one rule of Whedon - be careful what you wish for.

Lindsey Metcalfe

I have so many things I want to say that are major spoilers, so I'm gonna have to hold my comments until season 2 (and beyond, in some cases). All I can say here is that we're coming up on my favorite season of Buffy and I'm very much looking forward to you finding out how wrong or right your predictions for it are c:

Danny Tyrell

Definitely seconded, longer video = more content after all!

Danny Tyrell

yeah honestly the way they did it is... out of this world. with supernatural, the first season was all dark and mysterious with some one liner jokes here and there, but the main characters are men in their 20s that cant talk about their feelings, so it lacked that in a way. and i just recently started watching vampire diaries and thats the exact opposite where sure it can be suspenseful but its purely a drama show, its all about the relationships. so the fact that buffy was able to do both so well is awesome

Alley Box

No need to worry about reviews being so long! As others have said some reactors have reviews that are 2-3+ hours long and we all eat that up haha. So just talk as long as you like! When it is about Buffy we'll listen forever xD

Jenn Rose

Buffy at its core is a family-type drama about a group of friends growing up, so if you like that the ride will be amazing. Beyond that the supernatural stuff is very well developed right along side the drama, with college courses being taught about the Buffyverse. One of the biggest strengths of the show is the ability to do several things really well all at once. There are times that will make you laugh, cry, cringe, smile, cheer, swoon, and hide under a blanket all in one episode.

Miricat

Wow - I've just realised, when you're done watching Season 2, you're going to need to film a review of this video, as well as the season - just so you can comment on your expectations and predictions for S2. Cool stuff!

Dave Ford

oh mannn, ive done that in the past. watch one bad episode and write the whole show off. but yeah, i guess during my video for that episode, i was able to have a lot of fun with it in terms of poking fun, but oooof looking back, it aint pretty

Alley Box

if you liked season 1 this much you're gonna love season 2, don't get me wrong this has been my favourite show since i was way too young to be watching it and i love this season but it probably has the most not great episodes

TheSilverfinch

I think you can safely make your season reviews whatever length is comfortable for you and most of us will enjoy it.

UTU49

I'm so glad you ranked "Teacher's Pet" as the worst of the season! It's such a bad episode. It was the first Buffy episode I was able to catch (working after school at a movie theater, I didn't get home until 10:30ish, and yeah... before DVR/Hulu so... you miss things. After catching that ep, I decided the show was terrible, and didn't return until Season 3. Def. a bottom of the list episode for me!

Ed Badalucca

More of a compendium

Superfan Giovanni

You're writing a book with Alley in it?!

UTU49

Liam Duke is EVERYONE'S cinnamon roll.

Rachel Espiritu

Dope I've been looking forward to your review broski :) Also thanks for answering my principal question lmao, R.I.P Flutie.

Valkyrie

You're the only Buffy reactor in my book!

Superfan Giovanni

oh danggggg okay cool. next season, ill have twice as many episodes to talk about, so im sure it'll be getting longer haha

Alley Box

Don't worry at all about the length of the video! Another Buffy reactor has season review videos that have been approaching 3 hours and I watch every minute of it. :)

Miah

Been waiting for this. I will comment more after I have watched.

Allan Cornett

Yee yee 😎 Been waiting for this ✌🏼
