Remember how timid and mousy Willow was at the beginning of season 1? Little by little we're seeing Willow grow. It's so slow you can miss it, until you look back at how she used to be and think "Wow!"

John Kress

They actually thought they had come up with a really cool name for a demon until they realized that Makita tools were used to make their sets.

Tim Pierce

Makita Matata! What a wonderful phrase! Makita Matata! Ain't no passing craze! It means wealth for the rest of your days! It's our problematic Philosophy Makita Matata

Sean

I like this episode too. It is fun and entertaining. I never skip episodes when I re-watch. Even episodes that are considered some of the "worst" episodes on Buffy are still entertaining or interesting, or provide character growth, or have great lines.

Kirby

i never realized that was a fashion style for guys in the 90’s haha reminds me of a speech class i had to take last semester where my professor was like “pls for the love of god.. boys.... wear a collared shirt and look nice for ur speech” 😂 so for me, its feels a little more professional lol

Honestly, some of my favorite episodes in the show are ones that are not "big plot advancements." Some of them are, don't get me wrong, but this show is all about the characters and the show's character work always shines even when the story might be kind of meh for some people.

ropecrewman36

Agreed. Also, I've come to the conclusion that there are no true filler episodes in this show. Ally already said this, but the episodes that don't advance the season's plot always do something to develop the characters. That's why this show still holds up after all these years.

ropecrewman36

fraternities can get wild 😳 u never know lmao

Alley Box

Ooo! You kept Angel's cat bell. Lovely! Don't worry about it as a running joke - you'll work out when or if you should drop it, I'm sure. Love that you thought this was a normal fraternity even while they were half-way through their ceremony and you'd seen them kidnap a sorrority girl during the first five mins of the episode :-)

Dave Ford

When I hear the demon's name, for some reason I hear "Makita Matata", as in "Hakuna Matata"

Kenny Teeology

theres a lot of episodes throughout the show that I find fun but generally get panned by the fandom at large and I don't get it. Like some don't age well, like Inca Mummy Girl but it still has so many great little parts that I can't hate them.

Vincent Valentin

"why are they all wearing collared shirts?" lol cause it was the 90s.

ToySouljah

yeah same!! it was v surprising to see that many dont like the episode! i even said in my original footage that this would be one that i would have a lot of fun rewatching bc it had so many fun things going on (“fun” as in from a viewers stand point lol, im sure this wasnt fun for buffy 😂)

It's strange, this episode is often considered a weaker one from season 2, some people have even said that it's skip-worthy. But you really picked up on all the things that make it fun -- the character stuff (both comedy and development) from the core cast (especially Giles and Willow) is really great. And even though Xander still has a lot of "jealous" moments involving Buffy, his overall portrayal is a lot more of an actual friend, rather than just him having a crush. Buffy Willow and Xander just hanging out watching TV in the intro is pure wholesome friendship and I love it. And like you pointed out, BtVS does a really good job of weaving the character development into these "filler" episodes, so even if they aren't full of "main plot" they still add to the show. We got to see Willow pop off, Xander try to be heroic AND wear a wig and lipstick, Giles and Buffy father/daughter vibes, and Cordelia actually hang out with Buffy on purpose (sort of). In some ways that's even better than if this was a big "plot-focused" episode. Anyway as always, can't wait for the next one!

ModernArtery .

Love the new setup! Also, Willow had some great moments in this episode. I loved her character before then, but pretty much everything from 13:14-13:30 was where I decided that she was my favorite. She certainly earned her BFF badge the way she stood up for Buffy!

Have to tell you, your reactions are the only ones where I watch the full version and edited version...and things like the bell are exactly the reason why 😂😂

Candice

Wanted to add some love to continuing Angel’s bell as a running joke so I guess I’ll throw in my two cents on the episode as well since some have come down on it in the full reaction. While it isn’t a groundbreaking ep by any means, it has great dialogue and every character has a moment to shine; the Buffy/Giles development, the borderline iconic Buffy/Angel scene, Cordelia continuing to be the same and somehow still growing, and I think this is arguably the best episode for Willow as a character so far. Personally, I’ve always found this ep to be pretty good and perfectly enjoyable. Especially within the context of the series so far. Alley has reacted to 17 episodes now and I would easily put this within the top ten.

tc3

haha i wasnt sure if i should keep that as a running joke like i did with “a child” thing but i think people like it 😂

Alley Box

OMG THE BELL IM DYING

Colleen Elizabeth

I checked the edited version for exactly one thing: Angel's bell. The fact that it came back made me smile; I hope it doesn't go away.

Sean

My day always gets better when I get a notification that you've posted a new video!
