edited will either be up later today or tomorrow
also: thank you again Kristin! im so hype bout the Buffy & Giles figures :')
Now that all of Buffy has reacted to it can be pointed out that Buffy says they can go back for "the body" which is also the name of the episode they deal with Joyce's death. No relation, but still somewhat interesting. :P

Oh! And I LOVE the music that plays over Buffy and Ford's discussion, especially right after he says, "These people are sheep." I haven't actually seen anyone talk about it, but I always notice it while watching.

I Got a notification with a response to this comment saying that somebody should do an edit of her edits with Xander commentating. I thought about this but then decided not to do it because frankly it would cause spoilers. Especially if I were to do an edit with Xander doing you're not wrong in the spirit of how he says it in this episode oh, that would be Major Spoilers and I don't want to do that to her

I honestly think his love for and commitment to Drusilla is what made him such a popular villain - and kept him on the show past his initial episode.

I agree from Buffy's side - she's 16, most everyone has a puppy love around that age. I don't agree with Angel being emotionally mature. I won't go on too much of a diatribe here, but I always feel like he's a grown man stalking a young girl. When they first met this was very literal: he was following her and had been for who knows how long. He wouldn't even have shown himself had she not noticed him first. And ... well here goes the diatribe after all. I'll stop now.

This is an under-rated episode by most of the fans, though clearly not here. If this episode had been given to another writer or director, it wouldn't have been nearly as good. Joss is genius. I really enjoy your reactions.

Your excitement in the opening scene made me really excited too - albeit with fewer hand gestures ;-) It really is a great opening.
I know it's been done before (and after) but I really like how they handled the whole bad-guy-with-a-tragic-past thing. "You have a choice. You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice."
Side note: I've seen this episode many times and I only just now noticed Willow has geometric figures hanging above her bed!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in the comments yet (at least not that I saw), yes Angel tortured Drusilla, killed her friends and family, and made her insane, to the point where she fled to a convent, but he killed her on the day that she took her holy orders. So Drusilla is a nun. This also means that Angel did all these horrible things to her and then let her live for at least a month or two in a convent, just waiting for her to finish studying and becoming a nun, so that he could turn her.
What...a...creep!

Spike's reaction to Drusilla being threatened does give us deeper insight into his character, and also the fact that he kept his word and turned Ford into a vampire, even though the plan went totally wrong and he didn't even like him. Spike seems to take keeping his word seriously.
Xander comes off better when Joss writes him. He's still funny, but his comments usually have more bite to them, like his double "You're not wrong" about Angel.

Roswell was decent until mid way through the 2nd season and then it just went downhill. Really not the writers fault, the WB wanted a super science fiction show and that's not what the writers obviously had in mind. It was lucky to stay on the air after the first season because of the campaign fans had.

You could fully disable Patreon comments and only enable comments on your edited Youtube videos, and have moderators for those comments. That might be the only workable way. Seems a little extreme to completely disable Patreon comments but I honestly think it's worth it.

Yeah honestly the best thing to do sadly is probably to just not read the comments at all. I also follow Liam Duke and he definitely got spoiled on some stuff via Patreon comments, and I really don't see how it can be avoided. There are some people who just can't seem to help themselves from posting all these "hints" about stuff, and they think they're being clever, but the fact is they're just spoiling things for no reason. If you're enjoying the show Alley you should honestly just not read the comments at all. If someone can come up with a good system to get around this issue, I can volunteer my time to help moderate comments or whatever, but until such time as a system is in place I would honestly just not read any comments at all

Your insight into Spike is spot on. He's completely different from any vampire we've seen so far because he seems to genuinely love and care for Drusilla. It's a really interesting dynamic and makes such a nice change from the more cartoonish, ritual-y vampires we'd seen in season 1.

Also it’s not just one comment or one hint that’s the problem, it’s the cumulative effect of multiple hints from multiple users. Especially if they are not being as clever as they think they are.

I'm kind of there, too. I recognize it as beautifully written and well-acted, and it has some important things about Angel's past and Dru and Spike, but it always felt.... I don't know. It's that "New person comes to town and suddenly he's the most important person in the protag's life, even though we never heard a word about him before" thing. It just doesn't land for me emotionally.

Seeing a new reaction on your channel when I get home from work is 10/10
Edit after watching: Glad you liked this one! But it's not a huge surprise, it's definitely a great episode. And yeah, like you pointed out, the Joss Whedon written-and-directed episodes usually stand out in quality and story impact. The extra backstory we got this episode is fantastic: Angel's history with Drusilla, and seeing that there is a deeper level to Spike and Dru's relationship. Even though he's evil, he actually does care about her, and that definitely adds another layer of complexity to both of their characters.
And the other stuff this episode is just awesome too. Xander's many great one-liners and facial expressions, a one-on-one scene with Willow and Angel (the first time that's happened I think?), more Giles and Jenny date-age, it's all great. One minor complaint, not too much Cordelia this episode, but there's so much good stuff throughout that I guess they had to cut something out.
This is definitely a great point in the show. Halloween and Lie to Me are both fantastic episodes, IMO two of the best of the entire show so far, and having them back to back is really awesome. Can't wait for you to get further into the season!

I have a idea. Maybe don't look at patreon comments right away. Have a few people that overlook them, and if any of them have spoilers they can tell you which ones not to read. Like "Don't read a comment from -this person- and be careful with -this person-" Like so you could still read the other comments but if you see those names just skip right over them so you don't read the spoiler? Idk it really is a hard situation.

I think whenever we make any references at all to future events, we should think about Alley's perspective as a first time watcher. If we were watching this for the first time, would we benefit from that comment... or would it actually harm our enjoyment of the show?
If you sincerely ask yourself this question, I think you'll realize that the reactors and their communities are actually better off with no references whatsoever to future events, episodes, or seasons.
Just let the reactors experience the show for themselves, the way we did.

Damn. Is there a way to disable Patreon comments entirely? If you start posting your full reactions unlisted on YouTube (maybe a second channel to make double-sure they don't accidentally go live on your public one?), you could have those comments be modded still, I think? And if that's the only place people can comment on them, that would reduce the likelihood of spoilage.

okeedokee.... SO, patreon requires a larger plan (patreon would take more money each month) in order to add a teammate which I would be fine with BUUUT the premium plan is something you must apply for and the requirements are like "must earn 5k+ a month and have 100k+ followers on a different platform"???? and they also require you to talk with them over the phone to approve it.... which.. is so dumb to me, but either way, that is no longer an option :(

I’ve edited my comments for being spoilery before [I’m super paranoid about that though]. Alley’s already said she’s planning on reacting to Angel and knows the show exists [a lot of people made comments alas]. The other two things have been mentioned before in comments here thought I wish they hadn't. The spoiler part is more the remember this small thing because it's important. There seems to be a few comments like that here and Alley hasn't really said anything against them so far as I recall, she seems to kind of role with stuff that isn’t a blatant spoiler. Still it’s fun to be surprised by what ends up being important and what doesn’t. It’s a good rule to only highlight or talk about stuff that’s already been shown to be important. Hope you choose to delete this just to be safe....sticking with this episodes theme.

This is one of the most tightly written episodes of the series. Every element of this episode plays into the central theme of truth and lies and trust and all the shades of gray that exist in life. Sometimes the lie is easier to take than the truth, but part of growing up is learning that you need to deal with harsh truths and shades of gray. Billy couldnt deal with the harsh truth of terminal brain cancer, so it was easier to see himself become a villain in his little fantasy play.

Yes! I just knew you'd get hyped by this episode. There's just SO much to love in this one, from a glimpse at just how evil Angel was, to the Lie To Me speech from Giles at the end. And any scene with Drusilla is a delight; Juliet Landau's physicality and the way she speaks are always so engrossing. My favorite part though, and I think the most important, is Buffy's speech to Ford. "You have a choice. You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice." It's really a mission statement for the show. Keep your ear out for that word, "choice," as you watch; whenever it comes up something important is being said.

I never realized how beloved this episode is! Giles' speech at the end really drives home the change from season 1. In season 1, the Master is very much the "evil for the sake of evil" villain. He's two dimensional and that's almost expected in fiction. All too often, villains are dastardly for no apparent reason and heroes are virtuous because they're heroes. The allegiances and battle lines in season 1 are firmly drawn early and never change.
Starting in season 2, that just isn't the case. Buffy villains get fleshed out quite a bit and have different aspects. Spike, for instance, is absolutely a villain, but he genuinely loves Druscilla; and multiple episodes emphasize their relationship. Likewise, Angel and the Scoobies are heroes, but they betray Buffy's trust to look out for her. The waters get muddied, villains occasionally seem like heroes and vice versa.
And then there's Ripper... >.>
Sean

Sometimes I forget how good this episode is. But it really is. You get to learn a little more about everyone: Spike and Dru, Angel's past, Buffy's past, and Giles hates monster trucks (okay, that part we could have surmised). We all know Spike is evil, being a vampire and all, but even in just a few episodes his devotion to Drusilla has become apparent. He definitely makes for an interesting, layered villain and a great character over all.

Dave Ford
2020-06-20 17:38:15 +0000 UTC
So - one thing you missed when you recapped Angel's relationship to Dru - Angel did not just kill her family and then turn her into a vampire - he became fixated on her, murdered her family, tortured her (mentally, and possibly physically) till he drove her insane and then turned her into a vampire. Most vampires we see just feed. Angel is different - Angel didn't just destroy her, he did that with feeling, with a passion.
Regarding Spike - another thing that perhaps differentiated him from your typical bad guy - he honoured the agreement he made with Ford - and did turn him, even though their plan failed. And, yes, Spike clearly has feelings? for Dru - again - why? We see Buffy killing vampires without pause because their soulness. Spike is souless - but loves Dru. How does that work?

Wonderful day. I get up, grab a cup of coffee and discover a new reaction from Alley. One of the things I always loved about this episode is the future Twilight fan dressed just like Angel. I enjoy it when a show pokes fun at itself. My favorite character this episode is Willow. I read a recent review about Buffy that characterized her as a ditz. So far in the series Buffy is almost always the first one to figure things out. That's not ditzy at all.

this is def an example of Buffy at its best. the humor+the drama+ the themes. Yeah the Joss written episodes are generally all standouts in Buffy, he generally does the 6th or 7th episodes in the season and the finale and then pops in for a random episode here and there. So if you see his name pop up, buckle up. I was just looking through a list of his episodes and they're all pretty much classic episodes from the show. Though interestingly he only did one episode from my favorite season... anyway really enjoyed your reaction, can't wait for you to get to certain moments in this season... and the next season... and the next season.... AND THE NEXT AND THE NEXT AND THE NEXT.

I think Buffy has fallen quickly for Angel because she's 16 and they have been in life or death situations, like you said, which has heightened her feelings. She has probably projected onto Angel anything good she feels, even though they haven't talked in depth much. Also, it's quite difficult to imagine Buffy with a man that would be good enough for her -- a man that's just a strong (physically and emotionally) and Angel seems to do a lot of good, is mature emotionally for the most part (and Buffy has been forced to grow up faster) and she also doesn't have a father around much at all (other than Giles), so the whole older man thing... Freud reference here Haha. I really love this episode. I tear up *every time* she talks to Giles at the end and he says, "What do you want me to say?" Buffy says, "Lie to me." Tears.

This episode is so good for so many reasons I completely forgot Joss Whedon wrote and directed it. That scene in the bunker with Buffy and Ford I rewatch that scene like 10 times every time I get to this episode on my rewatches. Its so well acted and written. Buffy's anger is so good and sure feel bad for Ford but only so much as he's about to kill everyone including Buffy to get what he wants. "You have a choice its not a good choice but its a choice" Is like the mission statement of the show. Buffy herself had her chance at a normal life taken from her when she was called to be a slayer. She didn't like it but at the end of the day she accepted it. Think of all the people who could have died if she ignored it. Inca Mummy Girl had a raw deal and chose to ignore her calling and was sucking the life out of people. you see it many times. Just because its a shit choice doesn't mean its not a choice and your bad situation is no excuse.
Also I love you're reaction to Angel like in general lol. He's on screen and you're like OMG OMG OMG OMG lmao but also when he's telling Buffy about Drusilla "i made her insane" and you're like WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT THE FUCK NO *airhorn blasts* lol

So, way back in ye olden days of pirating episodes from p2p file sharing before torrents even existed, this was one of the four or five episodes I had saved and would watch over and over again every night before bed. Billy referenced that he found out right after the gym
burned down. Jeomanji is correct, that is from the movie, whose events are cannon but is not technically part of THIS Buffyverse. Confusing.
I always viewed it as if there is a hidden Buffy movie/season that was never made, but someone else used it to create a horrible fanfic. The fanfic is not cannon, but several of its' events did happen.
When Billy said he found out after the gym burned down, he was referencing sometime between the end of the movie and the beginning of season 1.
Remember, season 1 of Buffy started right after she left her old school for burning down the gym. Billy is from that time in her life.

Great episode! Often makes the top ten in lists of the best of Buffy's 144 installments. As for how Billy knew about Buffy being the slayer: the events of the Buffy movie are sort of canon. Joss Whedon was NOT happy with what they did to his script, but events like the ones in the movie did happen to some extent (later confirmed in a comic). Big fight with vampires > gym burns down > Buffy gets kicked out of school. Difficult for people not to get some hint of what had happened. Not a spoiler btw, this isn't flashed backed to or discussed in any more depth than the hints you might already have picked up.

Just remember whenever you see "written & directed by JW" be emotionally prepared for the roller coaster in store for you! ;) This ep is definitely one that puts you through the ringer....and this was probably the easiest of them.......

To make it even clearly in simplest form... I suck your blood Alley but I leave just a little in you so you don't die yet then I cut my Vampire skin with my nails and make you drink my Vampire blood before you die then later you turn. That's how it works.

Yes even Joe reactor didn't catch that, Joe exact response to that scene was shaking his head and saying we didn't need that. But I told him right away that was Ford and yes we needed that key thing set about spike loyalty that's all one can say. Yes but many fans have brought up how many victims turned into vamps did not all follow the lore of Buffyverse and drinking the blood of the Vampire that killed them but it's just minor detail. Also Spike kept his deal yeah but it might not necessarily been him to carry out the siring of Ford. Maybe he let Dru drink and turn him so she could have food but in the end it's still Spikes decision that Ford was turned. I'll message you later you know where. Been meaning to but been busy.

Yes, Spike does have another layer. But "Ah, I'll find another one..." clearly doesn't work here. Where would you find another Drusilla? You'd have to kill every relative and turn her mad and then, when she's about to become a nun, turn her. That's quite a bit of work, isn't it? ;)

When Buffy says “Well, I do feel sorry for you, and if those vampires come in here and start feeding, I'll kill you myself!” I completely believe both parts. Buffy understands what it feels like to be young and told you’re going to die. She wanted to run away and live even if others died because of her choice at first in Prophecy Girl. But just like it mattered what she ultimately choose, it matters what Ford choses and she’s willing to kill her friend for the sake/fate of those other people, people she doesn’t know nearly as well as Ford. SMG does such a great job of showing both empathy for her friend who’s dying and anger at the choices he’s making. I love that whole scene.
Lesser shows might have glossed over Ford’s dilemma, made him into a cookie cutter villain of the week like the one he very self-consciously and deliberately playacts when talking with Spike or when the movie is playing behind him [showing how he wants to see himself as just a character in a generic story unaccountable for his choices, moved forward by plot and fate], but this show ultimately gives his situation its due. We just saw Buffy struggle with the possibility of dying young: that kind of thing isn’t just something you can shrug off, it has real weight and pain, and it can be transformative. What you transform into is still a choice, and when your choices are only bad ones, they matter even more sometimes.
So glad you loved this one, it’s somewhat underrated in the fandom. Great reaction to the opening, honestly the same. And yeah Spike got his priorities clear :)

one of my favorite episodes. the themes explored in it are relevant and important to the series as a whole.

ahhhhh okay right right, he probably caught on when she was at the other school (since near the beginning of s1, buffy wasnt exactly subtle about it. so i can only imagine how she acted when she first became the slayer lol)

I just love that ending. It reminds me of how James Marsters starts answering the more juicy fan-questions: "Do you want to hear what you want to hear – or do you want the truth?" – I wish for once, somone would go "Lie to me..." then, though.

OHH MY GOD WAIT! is the vampire at the end when theyre at the cemetery Ford?? idk why i thought it was a neighboring corpse?? (thats why i said “thats just Buffy’s life in a nutshell” bc i thought it was not relevant and just another vamp to ruin her moment) holy shit, thats honestly really interesting that Spike did actually keep up his part of the deal (in a twisted way)
so in order for someone to become a vampire, a vamp drinks their blood and then kills them? and then after some time, they come back as a vamp?

I remember being so surprised at Spike keeping his word and turning Ford. Such an interesting choice for a character that is a big bad.

Alley Angel tormented Drusilla before having his soul returned and drove her crazy , that's why she is the way she is . Spike's affection for Drusilla goes back a long way and will come clear as more is revealed . Ford went to Buffy's previous school and probably became aware of her odd behaviour with the gym burning incident so that's where he probably heard about her at least thinking she was a vampire slayer .

Much more clever people than me pointed out that previous episode was purposefully using mythology of Janus to represent the transition of the show. He's a god of beginnings and endings, and there's a noticeable shift of the tone before and after that episode. Halloween was lighthearted and rooted in childhood, this one gets darker, more mature. For one we have a villain we can feel for. He makes all the bad choices but all out of fear. Secondly we might have heard about Angel's soulless days but it's the first time we see a "living" proof of damage he would cause. And finally Buffy and Giles at the end... That exchange is a classic for a good reason. Just beautiful.

Take two things from this episode about spike I hope you learned. One is that he has love for Drusilla stopping the buffet immediately. Two that no matter what he's loyal to his deals as he didn't have to turn Ford but he kept his side of the deal. And one could look deeper and say Spike changed Ford cause he knew Buffy would have to bury the body and could be a surprise for Buffy and pain that she'd have to slay an old best friend.
I do like that you mention what is Diego wearing and where can you get one! Lol I was smirking so hard cause I knew later Buffy would tell it like it is about that cringy outfit and you over here liking it 😂
I'm glad you reacted right away saying where did this episode come from. That's exactly what Joe reactor said after the brilliant episodes and there are ha lot of them. Love how shocked you were finding out why and how Drusilla got psycho crazy creepy. And now you know a little of it lol. 🌻💙⚡👑 #ShesCool #SecretCrush

*does a happy dance as you get super hype* I'm preemptively excited for your s2 wrap-up. and you're only 1/3 of the way into the season I love that you've already caught on to the 'directed by Joss' clue. Now we just need to keep spoilers away so that's the only clue you get to the big ones. The "widespread panic" poster while Willow's trying not to tell Buffy she's looking into Ford is still one of my favorite things. Yes, you got the Angel/Dru story right. He mentally tortured her, then turned her to keep as a trophy of his "work". And, yes, the Spike/Dru relationship is very unique in that Spike genuinely loves her and she's his first priority over everything else including his plotting against the slayer. It's so hard to respond directly to all your questions and comments without being like 'yeah it's like this because x-y-z' lol.
