3x21: "Graduation Day: Part 1"
OH BOOIIIII.. so much beautiful set up for the finale, I am so so excited to watch the next episode! (as of posting this, I haven't watched it yet! sorry, been behind 😅)
but danggg faith OKAYYY... they really went there with it 😳 so much is happening... how tf is this season gonna end??
also so sorry bout the wait!! hopefully I can get the next episode out tomorrow, but it will be up Thurs at the latest :)
hope y'all enjoy!! :D
This episode ties in with one of those old monster of the week episodes, "Ted", so well. In that seemingly inane episode, Buffy has to deal with the moral dilemma of killing a human. Look at Buffy's face right after she stabs faith, then go back and watch her face when her mom tells her Ted is dead. It's completely the same. I think it's pretty easy to gloss over this or to think she faced that dilemma later, but to me it was important for many reasons that it happened right after she did it. Heck, she looks right into Faith's eyes and the emotional communication there was fairly deep.
I don't know, that's my thought about that scene. Though I do have to say, there is nothing quite like a slayer vs slayer all out battle. It couldn't really have been better.

The fight between Buffy and Faith has been building all season and it still doesn't disappoint. I think Xander was afraid of losing Buffy like Faith was lost if she went through with murdering Faith. Ooo...I may have to watch your next reaction now. lol I'm so behind!

One of my favorite episodes. One of Buffy's darkest hours as a character, when she decides to murder Faith. It's a distinction I think the episode *tried* to make but it doesn't become clear until the next episode - because Buffy herself proves she didn't *have* to kill Faith, nor did Angel have to kill her. Buffy just didn't care and wanted to do it. That is, of course, what Xander means - he's afraid of 'losing' Buffy the way they already 'lost' Faith, for her to become a killer.
Also, Faith is a favorite character of mine. I love how visceral their fight is and how *different* it feels than just angry sparring like in the past, or Buffy with Kendra. Not to go all "Karate Kid, Part II" but "Daniel-san, this not tournament. This for real." When Buffy says "your blood" is the cure, the change on Faith's face guts me every time. Games are over. She's here to kill you.
It's a heavy thing between the two characters. And, yeah, Faith is proud of her in a macabre way.
Thank you for dunking on Angel at the end there, that was a good laugh

The "thought process" behind the handcuffs went something like this: "When Faith realizes that I am going to win (by killing her) she is going to attempt to escape so that I cannot use her blood to heal Angel." And then when it was obvious that Faith was losing, she took the time to break the chain on the handcuffs because her plan was always to run away if she was losing. Buffy comprehends how Faith thinks.

'Lover' has changed meaning. It used to mean someone with whom you shared a romantic (not necessarily sexual) relationship.
Sort of like 'hookup' used to mean meet up, and now it means a casual sexual encounter.
I connect these two changes of meaning because they both happened at about the same time and it took me a while before I figured it out.

First, real quick, I get what you're saying about the "first language" comment. Again, I didn't mean it that way and I appreciate you recognizing that, but, though I've never thought of it that way, you explained it well and I understand where you're coming from.
Now that that's out of the way, I just wanted to say that I am impressed by your ... coolness, I guess lol. Your sort of chill attitude is admirable and I just thought it was deserving of a mention.
All that being said, as strained as this conversation began, I've come to enjoy it. I think that you're a pretty awesome personality and I'm glad I've gotten the chance to interact with you.
I'll be keeping an eye out for your comments in the future.

A lot of the pathos of this season is that relationship between Mayor Wilkins and Faith seems to be really genuine, albeit a bit twisted. He's so evil he's literally about to become an actual demon, and yet at the same time he also seems to genuinely care for Faith. His "No father could be prouder," rings sincere—which on the one hand is exactly the thing Faith needs (the way Buffy needs Giles) yet at the same time chains her to the dark side even more fully.

Hi, Dad_Plays. You know, it's funny, but when you explain it the way you did, I get it now. My question marks were directed in frustration with myself, though, not with you. I have this horrible habit (as you can plainly see lol) of missing really obvious things, and I thought I was going bananas because I missed it.
The racial part was only because to my mind, if English had been my second language, it would have come across as making fun of ethnicity. Racism is a very serious thing, and I know you are not *a* racist. There is a world of difference between making a comment that could come across as racist without realizing it, and being a racist jerk. LOL please do not think I meant it that way.
I really appreciate both you and Alley taking the time to apologize and explain. Most of the time, when this kind of thing happens, no one says or does a thing. So thank you both.

Yes, Raven. I do apologize again. I edited my first response and I do hope you get a chance to read it. I am sorry. I was out of line. I go into more detail in the above response.
Alley, I appreciate the acknoledgement and I do, again, apologize for my tone in the comment in question. I made the mistake of allowing other factors to influence my character, which is a thing I actively try to prevent... though not always successfully. Obviously. Regardless, keep being awesome. I do look forward to watching the finale with you.
Now, Valkyrie... No. Racism had nothing to do with my comment. I'm sorry it hit you that way but it was the furthest thing from my mind.

Willow and Oz are so cute in this, I understand :D

@Dad_Plays_ Firstly, I want to apologize about my comment. I don't know how I didn't see it as very stupid and inconsiderate things to say about Angel and I am very sorry.
But if you could please only add to conversation and debates in these comments with courtesy and in a way that opens for conversation, not puts down another person, I would appreciate it. We are talking about a tv show, there is no need to bring up personal attacks.
If someone doesn't see something you do, see it as an opportunity to educate them. Just like you educated me on my comment and how harmful it was, but please do so in a way that is not hurtful to others.

Xander's comment about not wanting to lose Buffy is him worrying that she is going to lose her in the way that if she goes and kills someone, it will change her for the worse, in the same way that Faith has seemed to go deeper into the pit when she first killed someone.

While for the most part I'm not on team Angel, I have to side with him in that argument they have. I don't think it has anything to do with his age. He's just trying his best and a bad situation is forcing them together. Yes Buffy's feelings are totally fine and understandable but Angel's comment about her always on the attack is on point.

Anyone else having problems with onehub recently? The last 4-5 videos I've had troubles watching, it starts buffering (heh) like every 15 seconds. Last episode I had to download (which took like 4 hours urgh) to even watch. This time was better but it still stopped a few times. I never had this problem before but I don't know if it just my internet connection or something. It's very frustrating. And pausing it to load doesn't work.

A great setup for the season finale, fun little callbacks to previous events, Emma Caulfield is excellent as Anya & loved-up Willow is adorable :) Cool that you enjoy Smarties & understandable - a lot of American chocolate especially stuff like Hershey's contains butyric acid as a preservative which can also be found in vomit & it's why American chocolate is generally so disliked in UK & Europe, we don't use it here so it's immediately noticeable to us; there's also a lot more regulation about preservatives & artificial colours in general, which means that our stuff won't have as long a shelf life & certain colours may be more muted as we have to use natural colourings instead... so if you see stuff like nettles, beetroot etc. on a packet of sweets ingredients list they're probably there as colouring agents.

All right, so, I am going to say this as nicely as possible. Starting with an APOLOGY TO YOU. Because, yes, you are correct. I went back and watched it AGAIN, and yes, she absolutely did say it. You're right, I was wrong. That's uncalled for, and now I'm kind of pissed.
There is NOTHING, I repeat, nothing, funny or silly about suicide, That's a little like making fun of someone with depression because they're sad. It's tactless and offensive, and you are right, so I'm sorry.
THAT SAID...
There is no need to attack me. Asking if English is my first language? What if it isn't? You don't know. Making fun of my commernt because it's long and then insulting me for said comment without actually reading it? If you had read more than the first few sentences, you would see that I was going out of my way to be nice.
"Did you get it that time? Or do I need to break this down sentence by sentence?" Wow. Rude much? Insinuating people are stupid because they miss something is tactless and rude. Kind of like making fun of suicide.

It wasn't so much how Buffy changed on When She Was Bad, but that they've made a point about how killing a human changes a person. She would literally be a killer. They pointed out how Faith changed and how you can't come back from that. Faith I believe even said at one point that if "You kill me, you become me". Then that ties into the "Look at you all dressed up in big sisters clothes". Xander didn't want to lose Buffy in that sense. For her to lose some of her humanity, to become a killer.

EDIT: I'm editing this rather than taking it down because I feel it would cheapen my apology if I were to erase my mistake rather than leaving it for context. I do have to apologize to Raven Dark. I haven't yet read the comment below this (his/her response) but I have now gone back and read the above comment in its entirety and I have to say that I completely misread its tone and reacted very poorly. I am, in fact, ashamed of how aggressive I became as my response went on. The simple fact is that things were going on IRL that already had me feeling defensive and when I read the first couple of sentences of that comment I made the ridiculous mistake of assuingin intent without reading the whole comment. Honestly, in that moment, I read the first couple of sentences, saw the multiple question marks and things, assumed the worst, and just felt too exhausted to read a very long attacking comment (which I now know this was not that).
In short, I am simply and vehemently apologizing for the tone of my response. You didn't deserve that and, even if you had, it was over the top.
The only caveat I will give, however, is the exception I take to having someone suggest that my comment was somehow racist. I grew up in communities where people spoke three to four languages regardless of their race. Yes, my comment was out of line, but in no way did race have anything to do with it. To that assertion I do take offense.
Regardless, I hope my apology is received well and I am now going to go down and read the following comments and respond accordingly.
--------------------------------------
Ok, I'm not about to read the full length novela you (especially after reading your first question and your assertion that you watched her comments multiple times and don't see where she talked about Angel when he was suicidal.... smh) but I did read the first couple of sentences and am astonished at the level of aggression AS WELL AS the ignorance. Alley CLEARLY commented on the episode Amends when angel (to quote Alley exactly) "Listen here, grandpa (meaning Angel), you are the most dramatic little bitch I've ever seen, Angel. you cannot call Buffy a brat. Like: really? Really? Like, ok mr. I'm gonna go stand in the sun and fucking die because I'm so sad. Ok, yeah sure. Lets call Buffy the brat."
.... did you catch it that time? Or do I need to break it down by the sentence? She literally just directly insinuated that he was a "brat" for nearly committing suicide.
...Was English not your first language?
I wasn't making a huge deal about it. I just thought it was something that merited a mention. But if you're going to come at me that aggressively at least have the common sense to, ya know, have common sense.

Yep. I don't know if you know this, Alley, because I don't know whether you would have seen Jaws, but the "We're gonna need a bigger boat," comment from Xander is a Jaws reference. There's a scene in Jaws where someone (I forget who) sees how big the shark is that they have to take out, and he says, "We're gonna need a bigger boat." Sorry if that's explained weird, it's been a long time since I saw Jaws. LOL

I just love the relationship between Faith and Buffy, how complicated and messy it is. Also, I didn't even think of that but I definitely agree with the sentiment you made about Faith not knowing if she wants to be Buffy or be WITH Buffy, that's a pretty common occurrence amongst the sapphics. It seems like that's intensified with Faith's refusal to acknowledge any difficult emotion she comes across that she can't punch away or flirt her way out of. As always love the commentary.

Okay, did I miss something here, Dad_Plays???? I watched Alley's commentary at the end of the episode twice, trying to hear a part where she says anything about when Angel was suicidal, or making fun of that, and I still didn't see it. Am I going nuts, or did she somehow edit the reaction before I saw it? I thought I downloaded it right away, but maybe I didn't. Someone else explained (you?) that Xander wasn't being romantic when he said that to Buffy about not wanting to lose her, which suggests she didn't get that part, but when I saw it, Alley said that now she understands that he meant he didn't want her to go to the dark place by killing Faith, so it sounds like that part changed, like she was correcting herself. It feels like she sad one thing, and then realized what was happening and changed it. So maybe she took the Angel suicide mention out??? Which, if she did, yeah, good, because that would have ticked me off. There is nothing about suicidal thoughts that is remotely funny.
There was one part of what she said about Angel that I guess I could see people taking as Angel bashing, the part about him calling Buffy a brat, but I read that part differently.
I notice that Alley tends to use hyperbole a lot. It's a type of humor that if you don't get it, it can be offputting, but I have a similar sense off humor, so I'll try to explain it. It's kind of like where you overreact on purpose for laughs, and often it comes from people who are very emotionally driven and hyperactive. It can come off as obnoxious, but Alley doesn't bother me here, because I think what she was doing was putting herself in Buffy's shoes. She was deliberately overempathizing with the Buffster for humor, kin of echoing Buffy's thoughts as she sees them. When Angel called Buffy a brat, it's true, he doesn't totally get the whole teenage girl thing. That's not a bash. I love Angel. He can't get it, he's a 240 year old vampire, and male. LOL He shouldn't get it. So, "Angel, excuse you, she's a 17 year old girl," makes sense. Buffy is our hero, so we should understand her offense with his saying that, and I think Alley was simply siding with her. I don't see it as bashing Angel or even disliking him here. I think it's just that that one remark made her go really deep into Buffy's headspace, and if it seemed over the top, it's because that's what those of us who use hyperbole for humor tend to do. It's an interesting quirk that can cause problems, because people who hear us yelling and see us gping all Kermit flails tend to think it means we hate whatever we're talking about. That isn't what it means at all. It just means we're super emotionally invested, and shows like this tend to get us going. But that's what is so great about Buffy, and shows what a great show it is, because it invokes such strong emotions, not just in us hyperactives, but in almost anyone who see it. It's passion, and I think that's all you were hearing. That is of course assuming I'm not a complete dummy and missed her making fun of his suicidal behavior in Amends....

Buffy's outfit isn't just something Faith would wear, its the same red pants/ black shirt and leather jacket combination as Faith wore when she stabbed the professor in the stomach in his own apartment- more foreshadowing for how the Buffy/Faith fight would end.

Alley see’s Willow and Oz have sex and immediately expects Oz to die. I would say her conditioning is progressing nicely, slowly but surely Alley is becoming one of us.

Heck yeah Graduation! This is an awesome two-part finale. Can't wait for the second half!
In terms of why Wesley didn't just lie to the Council... we learn a little bit later that the poison is called "killer of the dead" and it's a poison specifically used on vampires. I don't think it would have been possible for Wesley to accurately communicate what the poison was without cluing them in that the victim was a vampire. That's my theory, anyway.
As for how it makes sense that "the blood of a slayer" would be the cure to the poison, I always just figured that the blood of a slayer has some general mystical power that vampires can feed off of. Remember that in season one, the Master was ultimately able to break free of his prison after he drank some of Buffy's blood. So I always read it as, drinking a slayer's blood is like an elixir for vampires that can cure or restore them from various ailments (restoring the Master to his full strength, curing Angel's poison, etc).
Buffy handcuffed herself to Faith to keep her from getting away. Unfortunately Faith still did "get away" (or at least her body did) after breaking the handcuffs. And yeah, the scene with Buffy and Faith, Buffy's transformation symbolized by her outfit, and her conversations with Joyce, Xander, and Faith, about Buffy changing or being different, all culminating with Buffy killing Faith... it's intense!
Great reaction as always, can't wait for part 2!

Right after Xander’s “I don’t want to lose you” we see Buffy cleaning her face in front of a mirror getting ready to go after Faith. "Lost" is written on the lower right side of the mirror. Signs in this show are often a secondary commentary to the audience, sometimes jokes other times commentating on themes. This is one of the more on the nose uses.
If Faith is partly Buffy’s slayer shadow, the danger’s always been to get lost in the shadow.

To me, the whole thing about the Slayer's blood curing a vampire of the poison makes sense, because, as another commenter said, blood is where vampires get their strength, and it's already been established that a Slayer's blood is super charged. Drinking Buffy's blood allowed the Master to break through the barrier on the Hellmouth and get free. Plus, the poison was a mystical toxin, which is why Wesley said, "The council has all the known toxins on file, mystical or otherwise." Besides, even if there wasn't a plausible reason for it to work, this is fantasy, so not everything needs to have a wholley logical explanation. This is a show about vampires. Vampires shouldn't exist either, so if everything was logical, there would be no show. I dunno, there just comes a point where you kind of have to go, it's magic, go with it.

Did Faith do loads of terrible things? Yes.
Did she do them mostly to Buffy? Also, yes.
Is she a terrible person? I mean, obviously.
Do I love her and still have loads of empathy for her maybe because part of me relates to her story and attitude? Absolutely. That's what makes a story a tragedy.
To be fair, I feel the same for Wesley, who genuinely went to the council with good intent, probably knowing the answer he'd receive but trying anyway.

My favorite one so far is the Buffy/Angel fight at the end of season two. For a ninties TV show this fight is petty good. My main point is the improvement from previous seasons. The chill I get happens at the fights end.

Love this ep and love the Faith/Buffy fight the most. Every time I see it, it's still feels so intense with the whole build up even though I know what's going to happen.(the music was great too) They fought in Revelations, but this was so much better. The choreography and stunt stuff was awesome. A couple of days ago I just happened to watch a behind the scenes video on Youtube of the stunt work for that scene. It was so cool. They have lots of the behind the scenes stunt scenes on Youtube that I recommend watching one day Alley(if you're into that stuff)
I love this ep, but still do NOT like and cring at Buffy's line of "I'm talking about watching my lover die." It's the word "lover" I have trouble with, it just didn't sound right coming from her.
Love Buffy's outfit, red leather pants and black leather jacket,it's iconic.
Can't wait for the second part of the finale! Get your caps and gowns everyone!
Sidenote- I suddenly want to see a pic of Alley's boyfriend! :)

I'm confused the last upload slot was SPN and this one is now, so how is anything late? Or did you intend on doing both parts at once here and so it's late by virtue of not being out at the same time?
Either way I'm fine with the schedule I dunno when Thanksgiving is but if there's a break I hope it's not during cliffhanger 🤣

Man, I can't wait till you can watch Ian(Passion of the Nerd)'s brilliant videos on this show. One thing he mentions is the idea of Faith as Buffy's shadow self (via Jung) throughout this season, I think you really see it in their fight scene, like you mentioned with Buffy acting more like Faith.
It's Mayor Richard Wilkins III 😊Since you asked about his first name.
I don't think I've ever put together the story from Faith and the jumping off the building thing! Nice insight there.
Also, don't feel bad for delays-with the end of Supernatural I was legit expecting you to take like a full week off and would have been totally fine with that.
Hope you have a good Thanksgiving!!

I liked the fight scene, but idk, I felt like it came off as too choreographed. Like they were dancing or sparring and not actually trying to kill or defeat each other.

One of my favorite of all Buffy moments is in the last conversation in the episode between Anya and Xander, when Anya shifts from her sarcasm / argumentation mode to an almost tears expression of pure emotional worry for Xander ... a feeling she clearly DOESN’T UNDERSTAND which only adds to her anguish! “I feel like I may vomit” is a nice continuation of the line from the previous week’s “Homecoming” episode when she tells Xander that now she finds herself a mortal and a teenager she has all these *feelings* ... with those essential little hints of air quotes.
Anyway, amazing reaction as always. I’m not sure I can wait till next week to see Part 2. Can you Alley???

The "Give us a kiss" line that Faith says has a meaning behind it, I remember reading about it somewhere but I totally forgot. It's interesting that you mention her sexuality because there's a possibility that she was molested as a child and that line was what a creep would say. I wonder how Eliza felt doing this role since she had shared how she was molested on the set of True Lies by one of the set people.
Interesting how you mentioned the foreshadowing with Faith's story of jumping off the rock because I never realized that. I just thought it was some random background info.
I liked how Buffy was all ready to kill Faith, but once she stabbed her, she was in shock. I guess wanting to kill someone and then actually doing it is completely different.
Looks like Richard Wilkins (The Mayor) seems to have some fatherly love for Faith, which I'm confused about. She went from someone who he saw as an enemy and had planned to put her in jail for murder and now she's like his daughter. So is he actually evil or no? I thought evil people have no conscience or the ability to feel anything for other people.
I'm ready to watch part 2 along with you! :-)

Smarties and Kinder Surprise are my childhood in a nutshell. Your country is so cruel for depriving you of these ;) (And of Zubrowka with apple juice for the uni years haha). Regarding the episode - I think the handcuffs was just a practical strategy of making sure that Faith doesn't run away.

2020-11-25 04:16:14 +0000 UTC
She handcuffed herself to Faith because she figured (probably rightfully so) that if Faith saw that she was losing she might try to run or put distance between her and Buffy... which she did... by jumping off the building... So, yeah.

First, blood is where vampires get their strength. It's not far fetched that the blood of a slayer (which is mystically charged/more powerful than a normal persons blood) would pack enough punch to fight off the poison.
Second, you don't think that it might be important to know that you're dealing with a mystical poison that is specifically designed to kill vampires??? And you don't think that NOT knowing that it was a vampire who was infected might compromise their ability to find an effective antidote?
Anyway, great time watching this as always. Can't wait to watch the finale with you.

You seemed confused at Xanders "I don't want to lose you" I took it as not a declaration of love (he's mostly over her) but more genuine concern that she might lose her humanity if she kills someone (much like Faith) It's a genuine loving friendship moment. That's my reading anyway.
Tobijah
2020-11-25 04:06:53 +0000 UTC
The handcuffs are to prevent Faith from getting away. It does make it harder to actually fight, but Buffy needs to keep Faith from getting away and just hiding somewhere until Angel dies. Also just gives whoever created the fight choreography a way to spice up the fight scene.

Wesley could not lie about who got poisoned, because the poison was a mystical poison that only killed vampires. It was harmless to humans.

Faith almost kills Xander and Willow-actual human teenagers: Buffy *crickets*
Faith poisons Angel-Buffy's immortal ex who has already died twice: Buffy "OK now THIS is getting out of hand."
This is one of my all time favourite episodes, the journey of Buffy doing what she had to do and stabbing Faith is such an iconic moment. Yet you can't stop but feel the hurt as they stare at each other on the ledge like "Dang, we were friends how did we end up here?" breaks my heart every time. (give us a kiss ;))))) *punch*)
